Hi I'm Emma, a qualified Integrative Counsellor based in Folkestone, Kent. My counselling practice, Ember Therapy, was born from the concept of those moments we all have in life when we feel like our fire has burnt out and everything seems hopeless. I am passionate about reigniting that fire inside people- whether it's fresh vision for the future, finding freedom from addiction or discovering who you truly are.

No need for therapist formalities - I'm a real human like you, still figuring out life's complications. My name's Sasha and I believe in keeping things real and with a sensitivity to the context we live in. You'll get straight-talk from me but without judgment. I trained in Contemporary Psychotherapy so I get the mind-body-behavior connection and focus on your goals now. Respect and compassion anchor our work. Change happens through consistency and connection, not magic. I will be alongside you and bring empathy, wit and wisdom to our collaboration.

I'm an EMDR therapist who can work with all mental health disorders in particular complex trauma, neglect, and PTSD. My background is in Occupational Therapy within the NHS and I can work with varying levels of severity. EMDR I find is an effective tool to address issues or trauma from the past, resolve it, and put it back into the past so it no longer affects a person in the present. It uses techniques that affect a person on a neurological level allowing the client to utilize their own healing processes and resolution.

It can be so hard to reach out for help. Perhaps you are feeling unhappy, anxious or adrift in some way- or there's a specific issue you'd like to work through. You end up pouring through pages of profiles from professionals who all sound (and in many cases look) the same. How on earth are you meant to know who is the right person to sit with and share your vulnerabilities with? Beginning counselling can feel like an impossible task, and I am here to provide an authentic and friendly face as you start to explore your issues, whatever those might be.

Life not turned out how you had expected or hoped? Something not sitting right? A niggling thought or unrest within you? Happiness feels out of reach? Having experienced my own, at times, bumpy journey it has given me a fierce and unshakeable belief that change is possible in us all and we all have the potential to have a life beyond our wildest dreams! That’s not always to say we get what we may have fantasised about but that we work on ourselves; and as we embark on this our dreams change and they become reachable as we become more teachable and learn about the authentic us and what we really want

My counselling service is consciously focused toward men, providing a space to feel safe and supported to work through issues. It's often a misconception that 'men don't talk about feelings', rather that men don't know that counselling can be for them too. Some of the reasons to come to counselling include; Sex or Relationship Issues, Questioning or coming to terms with Sexuality, Work Issues, Bullying, both emotional or physical, Anxiety, Depression, dealing with loss and bereavement. I am a fully qualified Person Centred Therapist and registered member of the BACP.

The ups and downs of life can be overwhelming and can challenge your confidence. The courage it takes to seek help is the bravest step towards positive change that you can make. I understand how challenging it can be to trust someone you don't know while sharing your emotions. You will be at the heart of the process; after all, it's all about you and your wellbeing.

I work with people who are having trouble with relationships. This could be a romantic relationship, but it could be other family members, children, colleagues and friends. When things aren't working out, and perhaps emotions are high, it's hard to think straight and know what to do next. Worry about relationships also seeps into other areas of your life, making things more difficult all round. It could show up as anxiety, worry or a loss of self, feeling as though you don't know who you are anymore.

I understand that deciding to start counselling and therapy can feel like a big step, from the start of therapy I encourage my clients to feel empowered through the therapy process. It may be that you've lost a loved one, experiencing family issues, relationship breakdown, struggling with anxiety or work-place stress. It's common to be experiencing a few of these life issues at the same time, which can lead to overwhelm and burnout. As a psychotherapist I aim to offer a tailored approach to each client in therapy sessions.

First of all, I believe therapy is useful for anyone. What is commonly labelled as “mental health”, I would call “quality of life” - something we all struggle to manage. I have experience (and feel comfortable) working with psychosis, issues related to interpersonal trauma, and other aspects of life that feel undesirable or you feel are responded to negatively. I am however opposed to any form of conversion therapy.

Given the latest government advice all sessions will be offered online. I have ten years of experience of working in this way and I am happy to give you guidance to set this up. You will need an internet connection (preferably high speed), a headset and microphone. I can also offer telephone sessions but face to face via an online platform is preferable. Psychotherapy is about being listened to and seen in a particular way. There is nowhere else in life that offers a time and space to focus on your 'self' - your body and your mind. My Kent practice is in the village of Bridge near Canterbury and is easy to reach.

The search for a counsellor is the first positive step towards making changes in your life, yet I understand it can also be a daunting process. There are times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed, stressed, depressed or anxious. I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I can draw from a wide range of approaches which will be unique for each client. I don’t believe in a single way of doing things and this enables me to be flexible in my approach by supporting you and your individual needs. Together we can explore these feelings and uncover the way back to feeling better and brighter about your life.

My approach to individual therapy is tailored to each individuals needs, helping individuals navigate challenges and improve mental well-being. I focus on enhancing communication, strengthening relationships and addressing unique relational dynamics. I focus on providing a safe and understanding environment in our sessions. I offer short- and long-term psychotherapy. Sometimes, people find a few sessions are all they need to work things out and get back on track. For others, a longer-term approach may be helpful, particularly if difficulties have been there for a long time.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
