Through psychodynamic therapy we will explore your inner thoughts/feelings to identify patterns that are currently influencing your behaviour.
Are you tired of feeling like you aren’t yourself? Do you feel disconnected and lost? Would you like clarity on who you are, what your goals are, and how to embark on your healing journey? I support young professionals break the cycle of disconnection, exhaustion, and loneliness while connecting to their authentic self. I specialize in supporting the BIPOC community, particularly individuals with histories of trauma, depression, and anxiety. My approach to therapy is strength-based, culturally inclusive, and trauma-focused. I believe in collaborative, transparent, anti-racist and anti-oppressive care.

Psychodynamic therapy and Psychoanalysis are often referred to as “depth psychology” since they work to promote lasting psychological change, growth, and healing by bringing unconscious experiences and feelings to the surface so they can be experienced and understood.
If you are looking for a highly trained and experienced psychotherapist to work with for complex and/or longstanding psychological issues, please get in touch with me. In addition to my membership with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO), I am currently an advanced candidate training to become a psychoanalyst at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis (TICP).

What is keeping you from experiencing joy and happiness? Are you suffering from anxiety, depression or both? Are your childhood trauma impacting your personal and interpersonal relationships? Are you grieving the loss of a love one or have not given yourself time to grief? What patterns are keeping you stuck and why? Stress, anger, sadness and fear is telling you something. If you ignore them what are the consequences on your work-life balanced, physical health and overall relationships.

We all need a space where we can be ourselves. When walking alone gets hard, therapy can help us restore our sense of self and make life manageable again. Stepping into this space can look like many things: being curious about ourselves, making meaning out of painful experiences, coming into connection with vital feelings and needs, and understanding and respecting the parts of you that you want to change. For some of us, healing can only happen in a space that acknowledges the impacts of marginalization and the need for systemic change. From here, we can begin to find new ways of being in the world that honour all of who we are.

To me, as a Registered Psychotherapist, human being, and author of 'Binge Crazy: A Psychotherapist's Memoir of Food Addiction, Mental Illness, Obesity & Recovery' (2018), seeking help is a strength. It requires the courage and wisdom to reach your own truths. I'm rooted in Gestalt therapy, a holistic, here and now approach encompassing every aspect of your life. To find what works best for you, I include other modalities, from creative forms of expression to more structured methods. In Gestalt, you are the expert (on you) and I am the guide to help you explore what needs healing.

I foster a safe refuge where you can begin to unpack your lived experiences free from judgment. While honouring your story, I offer support in exploring what is working and what is deterring you from where you would like to be. In doing so, pathways can be created to explore healthier ways to cope, live a more meaningful and authentic life, gain greater insight, and communicate your needs and boundaries with others. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed/focused, anti-oppressive, strengths-based and draws from intersectional feminist theory. I integrate mindfulness, CBT, narrative therapy, neuroscience, and mind/body approaches.

I work with adults and couples to help them move towards a state of continued growth, compassion, and self-awareness in a way that is collaborative, strengths-based, and empowering. I believe in creating a client-therapist relationship that fosters authenticity, support, and space for both acceptance, and for change. This can begin in our very first session. Together, we can begin to tease apart the adaptive approaches to dealing with and moving through life you've grown accustomed to, and begin to decipher which of these patterns are serving you, and which you may be interested in moving beyond.

As humans we have a deep need to find connection. One of the most challenging things we can face is difficulty being seen and building relationship . Our routes to connection are forged in the relationships we first learn from, early in our lives. Finding our way through what that means for our current reality can be hard to do alone. Together we will explore what came before and what may be next, without losing sight of life now. Sometimes this means sitting in the muck with you; with the trauma, or the depression or the anxiety, and finding a way through; building new pathways of relationship and of being in the world.

Experiencing loss in life is 100% going to happen. This could be a death, loss of a relationship, a friendship, a pet. Sometimes you can see it coming and wonder if there is any way to stop it. Other times you're blindsided. Now your world feels unstable or $h!t is upside down. Navigating or preparing for loss is isolating & may make you feel and do all sorts of confusing things. You may be trying to emerge from this with a deeper understanding of yourself, improve your relationships, find confidence in your direction in life, restore a sense of safety/stability in the world or just cope with what is happening. Either way, I'm here.

I employ Western and Eastern modalities - CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy), Psychodynamic Therapy, Gestalt, Internal Family Systems, Energy Psychology - Yoga, Reiki, Mindfulness and Meditation.
Providing a balance of support and challenge, my approach to healing is holistic and comprehensive. I believe that each individual has all of the inner resources they need to achieve a sense of balance and equanimity. My role is merely to provide a safe, non-judgmental container in which they can reach their own integration - cognitively, emotionally and somatically. I aim to assist the individual's journey-making process through offering new ways at looking through the lens which often gets obscured by many mitigating factors. Clarity is the goal.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
