Psychodynamic
Psychotherapy.
My experience over the years has taught me that anyone is capable of change if they want it. Life is difficult and as people we face challenges that make us feel helpless or broken. However, I believe that we are also resilient and with support, we can get through any obstacles that come our way. I want to be a support to anyone facing these dilemmas by giving you a voice and providing the opportunity to be heard. My goal is to improve the lives of clients by enhancing their social and emotional growth and providing solutions to enhance their mental health and well-being.

I draw from
Psychodynamic
Therapy to explore your past, relationships, and defense mechanisms that you have adopted over the years.
Whether you are struggling with addiction, stress, chronic pain, or depression, I can help. Although these four issues may seem separate, there is a lot of overlap and chances are that if you are experiencing one of these issues, you are experiencing at least two others, where they feed off each other. My holistic approach takes into account your life as a whole. I believe in long-term recovery, so I aim to treat and heal root causes rather than symptoms alone. I also help to create sustainable and supportive structures in your life that you can lean on during hard times.

We will work together to create achievable goals utilizing Cognitive,
Psychodynamic
and Emotionally Focused therapies, among others.
In my thirty eight years of providing social work and psychotherapy services, I have learned that people seek counselling when they find themselves in difficult and painful situations. To makes matters more complex, the coping skills that they have learned to date are not providing relief or resolution. To put it simply - my clients want help in becoming “unstuck”. Counselling provides an opportunity to be understood and to learn new ways of perceiving and solving problems. My clients are able to expand their capacity to cope with multiple stressors and conflicts and are able to create a new vision of themselves and their future.

I enjoy drawing from various modalities such as CBT,
psychodynamic
approaches, and Internal Family Systems.
Maya Angelou said, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you". Our stories are profound and provide significant insight into who we are and where we have come from. It is through the act of sharing our stories that we are able to derive meaning and purpose from the painful experiences of life. Having someone to come alongside you to assist in processing pieces of your story can prove to be a healing and rewarding experience.

As we journey through life, unfair things happen. The associated thoughts, feelings and people can stay with us as painful memories, create a sense of burden and influence our future expectations. While we can't change the past, it is under our control to change the way we look at what happened. As challenging events and relationships unfold, we can control how we respond. We do this by becoming more aware of automatic negative reactions and replacing them with healthier thoughts, feelings and behaviours. In sessions, we explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, behaviours and interpersonal patterns that cause us to feel "stuck" in life.

My holistic, spiritual, and
psychodynamic
approach addresses the existential crisis of postmodernism that causes people to seek purpose and happiness outside of themselves―full of holes instead of whole.
You’re the Black Sheep of the family, who doesn’t fit in anywhere and struggles with loneliness: The Outsider. You are talented and intelligent with ambitious business and/or creative dreams; but due to procrastination fueled by self-sabotage, like addictions (e.g., cannabis, pornography, video games), you continually fail to achieve goals. You negatively compare yourself to others, find it difficult to overcome mistakes, feel like a failure, and wish you had the confidence to fulfill your true potential because you are meant for more than the mediocrity that most people settle for. Welcome, it's time to give birth to your nutsack!

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
