I have been providing therapy for many years and I consider it an honour to come along side others (individuals, couples and families) as they seek change and transformation. When you are faced with life's unexpected challenges, distress or overwhelming anxieties, seeking help and consulting with a therapist is a significant step.

As a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and client-centred Clinician, I prioritize destigmatizing and normalizing support for mental health. Our need for 'safety' and 'connection' takes precedence in life and relationships. The feeling of being unheard or silenced can lead to sadness, loneliness, resentment, and anger. This void can cause us to distance ourselves, judge ourselves, and suffer emotionally, leading to conflicts in our relationships with ourselves, others, and society. As the saying goes, "Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we are here."

Can you imagine if therapy took place while hiking through the forest, sunbathing in a field of wildflowers, chilling with some chickens, sitting around a campfire or simply from the comfort of your kitchen table? I believe that therapy has a real image problem that could be improved by embracing a healing realm which includes mother nature, play and genuine human connection. If you are considering therapy for you or someone you care about, but the thought of sitting in an office turns you off, then let's connect where you're at, or where I'm at: on 25 aces in Hamilton's wild west Flamborough!

Aspire Therapy is the private practice of Registered Psychotherapist Deborah Callander in Mississauga. ASPIRE is an acronym for A Supportive Partner in Recovery, which I believe describes my approach well. I draw primarily on Internal Family Systems therapy to explore the sources and development of the suffering in your life, critical to healing. Coping with pain by self medicating eventually does more harm than good. If you've tried to make changes but life has become unsustainable I can help. Let's discuss the options available to you for recovery.

***ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS: IN-PERSON & PHONE/VIDEO*** We believe that there is good in every person, and hope in every situation. We have helped individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and connect. As relational therapists, we appreciate the impact that our relationships have on our well-being. We do not see clients as having something wrong with their minds that necessarily needs to be fixed. Rather, we see our clients as unique individuals, each with their own stories and perspectives, embedded in important relationships and contexts that impact them. We see strengths and we see hope, even when it feels like there is none.

Stress highly depletes your energy to deal with problems. When feeling tired, frustrated and hopeless, it can seem like there are no solutions. In a safe, calm environment, where you feel accepted just as you are, you begin to develop self-compassion. By being gentle with yourself, coming from a place of non-judgement, you can attain so much. This trust allows you to open and us to work together to explore what is at the root of the problem. As you explore thoughts, and feelings you become more self-aware. Your energy increases and you become stronger, then able to learn effective coping skills to overcome challenges and to thrive.

Anger Management Counsellors

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
