I lost 100lbs and currently kept it off for eight years (I started August 15, 2012). I remember at my heaviest weight, I wanted to talk to someone who had been there, done that & understood I so badly wanted to change and my frustration at not changing. I wanted someone who could quiet my mind when it worried about my weight and help me gain control of my body and life. I know what it's like to start losing weight, only to abandon the effort shortly thereafter. If you repeat that pattern and put your health and quality of life at risk, then you likely feel that there are issues that need to be addressed psychologically - I can help!

I have the goal of helping people become their own therapists. I work with people feeling stuck in unhelpful thinking patterns and who find themselves returning to behaviours that they perceive to be unfulfilling or unhelpful. My primary therapeutic orientation is cognitive-behavioural, but I also have experience incorporating evidence-based approaches like mindfulness and self-compassion. I have founded a clinic called Grenadier Psychotherapy with the goal of supporting quicker access to services. Treatment is tailored to the needs and goals of each person. Grenadier is LGBTQ positive, trauma-informed, and weight inclusive.

It's not true, you do not have to face the hard stuff alone, so I honour your bravery in reaching out for help in a capitalistic, ableist society that favours individualism. I am so excited for you to lean into the support of a therapeutic relationship which is the foundational element to our work together. I focus on centering your individual experience with consideration for systemic, cultural, and political factors that influence your quality of life and relationships.

I understand the courage it takes to begin and commit to therapy, and that is why my first goal is to provide you with a safe and validating environment to share your experiences. Often we reach out for help with the goal of eliminating discomfort, however, I have found that the most significant gains in therapy come from facilitating a more compassionate relationship with ourselves. Being curious about our thoughts and emotions, and how they influence us, can be the first step in feeling empowered and meeting needs which may have been neglected for some time.

Angry, sad, confused or deeply lost, being with someone with years of experience in being with folks can matter. Do you just need someone to really hear you deeply and let you know that you are on the right path, that your soul is guiding you? Through getting to know you with words, deep relaxation, dream work, creative art work and body work we will make sense of this together/dynamically. Sometimes, you will just want clear feedback and I will give that too. Practically, as a Registered Nurse and Psychotherapist I bring a health care perspective and soul exploration.

The world is not simple & that can seem like a burden sometimes. I know what it’s like to accumulate a heavy burden of despair & dissatisfaction ending up feeling like life has lost it’s magic. I want you to be able to be solid & to support yourself in the discomfort that life brings your way. My training in Gestalt therapy supports me to look at the world in its complexities, not make assumptions and understand that each individual contains multitudes. I have experience working with clients from the Trans, BIPOC, LGBTQ communities as well as other marginalized communities where differences, power & privilege are at play.

Obesity Counsellors

Can obesity be a cause of depression and anxiety?

Yes. It can be stressful and debilitating to carry excess weight. Many people make inaccurate assumptions about people who are overweight. This stigma may lead individuals to feel badly about themselves, decreasing their self-esteem, or leading to feelings of worthlessness. An association between obesity and depression is well-established.

When should an individual seek treatment for obesity?

When obesity, or the feelings it causes, creates a disruption in your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Examples include avoiding social situations due to anxiety, an inability to participate in family life as a result of health problems, or poor performance at work due to low self-esteem or other concerns.

Are there specific medications for weight loss?

There are several prescription drugs that can help with weight loss, including semaglutide and phentermine. These drugs reduce appetite and must be prescribed by a physician. Professionals will suggest lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, before turning to drugs, which have side effects and typically are prescribed only for a short duration. Many people regain weight after taking weight loss drugs if they have not made significant lifestyle changes.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity is a cultural movement that promotes the acceptance of bodies of all sizes and types, rather than those that conform to societal ideals of beauty. It places self-worth, self-acceptance, and an appreciation for one’s body as goals to achieve a happier, healthier attitude about oneself and others, focusing on who a person is rather than what they look like.
