I’m trained in various therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), exposure therapy, motivational interviewing, and existential approaches.
At Prevailing Minds, we bring together clinical skill and lived experience with mental health challenges. I’ve worked with individuals with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance use issues, and many, many other challenges. I help people discover and maintain their motivation to change. My work is very goal-oriented so you can tell if you are making progress in our work together. I encourage taking learning out of the clinic and into the community and home. Sliding scale pricing is available depending on financial need. Please inquire!

As a person-centered therapist I bear in mind that no two people are exactly alike, and craft approaches to treatment that incorporate strategies for symptom relief and also allow for deeper exploration, drawing from CBT, Gestalt, and Existential modalities, and incorporating Attachment Theory when appropriate.
I consider it a privilege to work with my clients to feel better amid life's many challenges. Whether it's through modifying habitual negative thinking, developing greater self-awareness or moving past unhelpful patterns in relationships, I help my clients make positive changes in their lives. In therapy, we begin with a thorough exploration of your background and concerns, then collaborate to set concrete therapeutic goals to improve mental health and well-being, manage symptoms, and create meaning in life. My training includes degrees from Yale University and University of Toronto, and I've been in private practice for ten years.

Like many others, I draw upon multiple modalities to work with including CBT, Psychodynamic, Mindfullness, Existential and others.
I work with you to try to integrate the mind, body and soul. I believe these three elements of our being together heal and allow us all to work through our past or current trauma and they allow us to build our new future self. In my practice, the client drives the model that works for them, and my role as your therapist is to understand your objectives and support you in the direction to get there. A holistic sense of self is awareness on multiple levels, so a mind, body and soul exploration and transformation is crucial to understand and shift ourselves.

You're super self-aware, but despite your deep understanding of yourself and dedication to self-improvement, you're still stuck in the same repetitive patterns. You've always been a step ahead in understanding yourself, but you're caught in the same limiting thoughts and behaviours. This constant cycle often feels like a consequence of unprocessed past experiences that subtly dictate your life. Does this sound like you? You're not alone in this journey. Many self-aware individuals share your struggle, searching for the missing link that can unlock their path forward. Imagine no longer being bound by your past experiences.

I work with clients who are seeking a more fulfilling life but are unsure of the path to a peaceful and happy future. I use a gentle and non-judgemental approach to help my clients move forward. I help clients build confidence and self-awareness while teaching them to tap into their mind-body connection and their intuitive sense of knowing, or gut feelings. I have worked with people from different backgrounds including those who have experienced traumatic pasts. By providing a safe space to be witnessed, I guide my clients to explore the roots of their suffering while supporting them in recovering from difficult experiences.

Accepting new clients for summer 2024! As a woman from a cultural minority, you may feel overwhelmed by the stresses your culture can bring. Being told to keep silent. Growing up in a chaotic home. You may have been body-shamed. Or experienced trauma that your culture may overlook. You may have depression that can't be talked about with your loved ones. You may experience stress with eating, your health, body or career. You may not be able to pinpoint where your distress is coming from! I'd love to help you explore, label and resolve what you're going through.

Therapy shouldn't feel like a chore. While it might sometimes be hard to hear what is discussed in therapy, overall you should leave feeling like you've gained something useful or even transformative. Over time, you should feel you are getting stronger, more resilient and have shed layers of fear and anxiety. Of course this process can be overwhelming at times and you might not always progress on the timeframe that you thought you would, but when therapy goes well, you should feel more settled and more clear about your life. You should gain understanding about yourself and others and have a renewed sense of purpose and passion

Are you feeling stuck, rejected, or undervalued while you pursue what you want in your life? Do you find yourself trapped in a cycle of comparing yourself to others, feeling inferior, and struggling to fit into societal norms? You're not alone. Many of us have beliefs from childhood that dictate what success should look like (i.e., “get married," "go to university”). If these expectations don't align with your desires, it can lead to panic, overwhelm, and a sense of not belonging. Together, we can challenge these beliefs and uncover the person you truly are, without fear of judgment from others. This is your life, not theirs.

“Everyone wants to hold the new baby. Who holds the mom?” Motherhood is the ultimate personal development experience, but it can be a lonely one. Whether you are preparing for motherhood, struggling to conceive, feeling scared or unsupported in your pregnancy, experiencing birth trauma, or suffering with feelings of depression or anxiety as a new parent, mental health in the perinatal journey is just as important as physical health and recovery.

In navigating life's challenges, we often construct defenses that, while once protective, now leave us feeling stuck and isolated. Together, we will work to chip away at these accumulated layers and begin to articulate a more authentic and comfortable way of being in the world. My approach is rooted in compassion and understanding, offering a safe haven for healing while encouraging you gently to your full potential. Together, we'll shift from the shadows of criticism, fear and shame to a path illuminated by self-discovery and growth.

Too often, people endure their obstacles alone, convinced that they must shoulder their burdens in silence. Whether it's a child struggling with emotional regulation, a teenager navigating the complexities of anxiety amid life's changes, or an adult wrestling with depression, everyone can benefit from specialized support at various points in their lives.

Many of my clients come to me dealing with an awareness of the discomforts in their lives that often show up as a result of an over active mind. They have a desire to understand and work towards a more integrated and peaceful life. We often spent time understanding the patterns that link to current behaviours and then focus on how to shift those parts that no longer serve and work towards believing in their ability to navigate and stay centred through the ups and downs of life that are inevitable. My sessions often contain invitations towards mindfulness and somatic awareness in a mind body approach.

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
