Now you wonder if you’ll ever find a therapist who can understand your complex identity, your family, and what it means to grow up as an Asian immigrant.
You’re a giver, and you put in 1000% to care for everyone around you. On the surface, everyone seems to love you, and you seem to have it all. But underneath all that, you feel a sense of loneliness. If only they knew...after another day of work, feeling exhausted, with still another 20 items on your to-do list. Weekends, running errands for your parents, supporting your partner, your friends, volunteering for your community...tasks and responsibilities upon tasks and responsibilities. And you wonder to yourself, is this the rest of your life? Among a sea of friends, family, and acquaintances, why do you feel so alone?

I identify as a cis-gender, racialized Asian woman whose approach embraces a wholistic, reflective, equity-seeking, anti-oppressive/anti-racist decolonized lens. It's been an honour to be welcomed into many diverse communities through 20+ years in education, support and case management with racialized communities, gender diverse individuals, Indigenous peoples, people living with HIV/AIDS, newcomer populations, people who use substances, as well as sexual trauma survivors. The evolution of my practice includes a metaphysical component that acknowledges the interplay of mind/body/spirit

I have worked with a wide range of populations in various settings and have a special interest in working with Asian women looking to work through racial and intergenerational trauma and/or currently struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, career, cross-cultural issues, family conflicts, relationships and self-worth.
Hot take: Everyone can benefit from therapy. I spent years of my life wanting to hide my feelings from the people around me because of the stigma surrounding mental health—particularly as a second-generation Chinese Canadian woman. Once I began to accept these feelings and embrace them as part of the human experience, I was able to embark on a (life-long) journey of healing. When I discovered firsthand how transformative therapy can be, I realized I wanted to work with other individuals in assisting them with their journeys.

Hi there. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Maybe feeling stuck or that your thoughts are all tangled up? Do you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? Like you're not doing enough? It's okay, I have been in your shoes, too. As a first generation Chinese Canadian, I understand that sometimes things feel like they are out of control and the need to make sure everyone else is taken care of is a higher priority than ourselves. With your trust, let's work together to set healthy boundaries, untangle those thoughts, and taking care of yourself without feelings of guilt.

You’ve come looking for a therapist. Someone who helps you feel safe, seen and validated. Someone who sits with you when you feel down, self-critical, vulnerable and all jittery inside. Someone who doesn’t try to “fix” you but helps you know yourself and heal yourself. There are several ways therapy can help, but what makes therapy so unique is that you can be authentic, not judged, and your story can be safely shared with another. I am here to hear your story, to help you understand your suffering, and to give you tools and ways to understand your problem better. I am here to be a witness and hold space for your jittery feelings.

Growing up in Canada as the daughter of first generation immigrants has taught me the importance of cultivating a self-narrative that is both compassionate and curious; a part of myself that I can call on during times of uncertainty, pain, and turbulence to help me repair and reconnect. How we view ourselves is related to how we feel inside, and the kind of relationship we build with those feelings is important. When we are disconnected from our feelings, we often experience being stuck. I wish to work together with you on this journey to become unstuck – to provide support, honesty, and take witness in your transformation.

Our emotions and thoughts can have a significant impact on our ability to feel connected to others, achieve our goals and engage in the parts of life we find meaningful. These changes in ourselves can often be explained by challenging experiences or turbulent relationships, which leave us feeling depressed, on edge, or overwhelmed. Together, we will work to create a safe environment where you feel empowered to discuss, process, and problem solve concerns surrounding relationships, self-esteem, trauma, identity, and other topics.

I believe that we all have an inner knowing about who we are, what we need, how it is that we feel whole. It can be challenging sometimes to find our inner beacon to define where we want to go or determine the steps to getting there. I will work with you as a partner, a team player, to come to your truth and carve out the path that you want to take, so that life becomes a little more manageable or fulfilling.

I believe that all of us carry inner wisdom, which holds the answers we seek. Our bodies carry our stories and our pain for us. Somewhere along the way, we stop listening to the messages sent by our bodies. The space between ‘no longer’ and ‘not yet’ can be thought of as a liminal, ‘in-between’ space. We enter liminal spaces when experiencing loss, life transitions, illness, conflict, and burnout. Liminal spaces do not guarantee control or certainty and can often feel uncomfortable. Yet, these spaces can also feel vulnerable and allow us to discover new ways of relating to ourselves and those around us.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognise an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
