I'm a seasoned individual and group psychotherapist who loves her work. I'm guided by the belief that most of the time we have our own answers, but sometimes we need help uncovering our own answers and trusting our own judgment. Depending on your needs, we may: 1. work psychodynamically (explore your history and it influences current life), 2. work cognitive- behaviorally (explore how distorted beliefs affect your feelings & behavior) or, 3. work to resolve difficult experiences by weaving back and forth between the "here & now" and the past.

We are all in this together. Counseling is a collaborative process of exploration and experimentation leading to new ways of engaging with ourselves, the people around us, and the world as a whole. By learning how our past shaped our survival skills and beliefs, we create the possibility of acceptance, growth and change. Our society is troubled in many ways, and this is a place to take stock, try a different approach, and plant the seeds of change for ourselves and others. I have over 20 years of experience in mental health, with a focus on EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Motivational Interviewing, CBT and Mindfulness.

Waitlist for new clients
I believe the best therapy is grounded in up-to-date science, and I use research-backed interventions, including CBT and DBT.
**Not currently accepting new clients. Please contact me if you'd like to be added to my waitlist.* Some of my clients find me after a lifetime of perfectionism and self-judgement, working (too) hard to make everything seem okay from the outside and paying (too) high a price for doing it. Some find me because they have experienced, or witnessed, something horrific or traumatic. Some find me because intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors are starting to take over their lives. Some find me because the stress of their job is becoming too much. And some find me because they feel shame and anguish around sex or their bodies.

I utilize CBT, CIMBS, EMDR, Lifespan Integration & Energy Psychology; gently bringing resolution to past hurts by integrating the neural systems in the mind and body.
Whether you are dealing with stressors related to past trauma or current life challenges, you don't have to work through the emotional struggles alone. As we face complex challenges unique to the multiple roles that we hold in your life, it's easy to get lost in everyday responsibilities, ignoring the potential warning signs of depression and anxiety. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, angry, restless, racing thoughts, exhausted, stressed, living in survival mode; give yourself permission to heal! How you think+how you feel+how you act, creates your life. Take a mindful approach to an awake and poised you.

I draw from several treatment modalities that have evidence to support their effectiveness including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Integrated Behavioral Couple Therapy.
I believe in the importance of providing a therapeutic environment that is safe, supportive and non-judgmental. As a therapist, I am actively involved helping clients explore issues to gain insight, identify strengths, and learn effective coping skills. Additionally, I work to be genuine, accepting and empathic, because my experience has been clients are more successful with making healthy changes when these factors are present. I work with a range of clinical issues including depression, anxiety, chronic pain, relationship difficulties and addiction. I am experienced working with diverse ethnic, racial, and socio-economic clients.

Shelena employs an integrative approach that combines person-centered, somatic, cognitive-behavioral, and attachment-style methods.
When we face major life changes such as a career shift, move to a different city or country, or start of parenthood, we often feel lost. Although life changes, we do not always change along with it. We might be struggling with anxiety or depression, or we might not even be sure what we are facing. We need assistance to process, sort it out, and understand what is happening and who we are now. This is the ideal place for that. Shelena will provide you with the space and support needed to navigate through changes, find better ways, determine the next steps, and discover peace within change.

Together, we'll unpack the layers of your story, identify patterns that may be holding you back, and co-create personalized strategies to help you move towards greater clarity, resilience, and well-being. My approach to counseling involves elements of humanistic theory, experiential and existential therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Gay Affirmative Therapy, mindfulness, and family systems and multicultural theories.
My work empowers clients by helping them find clarity amidst the chaos of distractions that impede engagement in their present experience. I believe the fundamental vehicle of change is the relationship between the counselor and the client. For me, therapy is a collaborative approach in which the therapist helps clients confront issues by staying present and exploring their narratives and relationships through different dynamics and perspectives.

I utilize a blend of CBT and a solution-focused approach derived from the strengths perspective.
I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in the State of Washington (LW61263458). I hold my Bachelor’s in Social Welfare and my Master’s in Social Work from the University of Washington. I was born in Germany to Vietnamese refugees and relocated to the United States at the age of ten. Being an immigrant has enriched my lived experiences and exposed me to both the complexity of cultural and generational divides, as well as the importance of embracing one’s own cultural identity.

I see the therapeutic process as a collaborative one. My approach is to provide a safe, warm and respectful space for my clients to navigate through any challenges they are experiencing, or areas they would like to improve upon in their own personal journey. Many times these obstacles may hinder an individual from moving forward. My role is to assist them in this process to move towards living a more fulfilling and whole life.

It has been my experience that evidence-based approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Supportive Psychotherapy, and Motivational Interviewing produces successful results.
My patients are usually hard working adults who have run into some tough times or are experiencing difficult emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and addictions. I focus on using a strengths-based and harm reduction approach, which views each person as an individual with unique strengths and challenges. Using this approach values the person and facilitates a customized treatment plan for the individual. My role is not to judge you or your behaviors, but to act as an independent consultant for improving your mental well-being and quality of life.

My approach combines modern behavioral theory, relational work, acceptance & mindfulness skills, and techniques from both cognitive and somatic trauma therapies.
I work with young adults in their 20s and 30s who are navigating the transitions and tasks of early adulthood such as moves, breakups, career issues, and processing past traumas; teens dealing with the pressures of highschool; and parents who want to decrease conflict and improve their relationships with their kids. I also help people process past experiences of living in residential treatment settings, especially "troubled teen industry" survivors. While not all of my clients have ADHD, I specialize in working with both adults and youth who are diagnosed with ADHD.
