I work with people to encourage them to practice self-acceptance and improve their relationships. For many people, the difficulty they are experiencing began with early learning. Sometimes the beliefs we carry about ourselves are at the root of anxiety and depression. Sometimes there are issues of trauma that need more resolution. With time, understanding and support, you can improve your life. In working with clients my first step is to build an understanding of the issues and the person/persons in front of me as well as I can. From there it's a process of finding what skills and techniques work for you. It does get better.

Sometimes in our lives, we can become overwhelmed by emotions that feel like they could blow us over. Letting ourselves feel these emotions may seem like too much or too inconvenient. As a result, we may begin to hide these emotions through denial, isolation from loved ones, or by acting out. Of course, over time, this can be exhausting and lonely. It can also take a toll on our relationships, as well as our physical, emotional and spiritual health. My hope for you and I is to collaboratively discover ways to meet moments of challenge with openness and kindness.

Feeling anxious? Struggling with “I’m not good enough” thoughts, feeling burnt out or worried you’re letting everyone down. It’s overwhelming and lonely. As a late ADHD-er/neuro-spicy (neurodiverse) individual I know how complicated all this can be, especially since all these things can affect each other. I've worked 11 years in the mental health field with adults navigating issues of anxiety, trauma, ADHD, and burnout issues with the goal of partnering with people on their quest of improving self-esteem, quality of life, learning coping skills, combating negative thoughts, and figuring out that balance of acceptance and change.

I love working with adults and older adults. I often work with people on anxiety, depression, trauma, and difficulty with life transitions. My approach is supportive, warm, and nonjudgmental. My theoretical orientation is eclectic, drawing on humanistic, existential, and narrative approaches as well as skills-based frameworks such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical-behavior behavior therapy (DBT). I work with a feminist, social-justice focused, and antiracist lens to appreciate the ways in which people and their wellbeing are affected by systems of oppression and how this may challenge or connect us in therapy.

I am currently fuIl and I am not accepting new clients. I join with clients in a safe, non-judgmental and collaborative way. We will work together to explore, understand and resolve the challenges related to the counseling goals they have identified. My treatment approach is both creative and flexible. I allow clients to direct each session with validating and encouraging support from me throughout the process. While using various treatment models such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to cater to the needs of each client, I compliment each model with a strengths-based approach.

Everyone needs hope. We despair and turn to alcohol, food, shopping, sex and the infinite screen to fill our void. We think we know what we want: intimacy, confidence, inner peace and a sense of achievement. We want to matter. We are tortured at times by self doubt implanted by past traumas. I offer a secure place to be yourself to unravel your secrets, fears, shame and guilt. I have 26 years post-doctoral clinical experience counseling individuals, couples and families. I view human problems from a social systemic perspective addressing the individual and their social context.

Are you feeling not right in your body or as if you don’t belong to the gender you were assigned at birth? Are you afraid to come out to someone you love? Did your partner or spouse tell you he/she/they are transgender and you are left with confusion and fear? Are you a parent of a child who came out to you and identifies as LBGTQIA and you don’t know how to process your feelings or take a deeper look within? Do you use substances and feel stigmatized by being called an “addict” with no hope for support? Do you use substances and are not ready to stop, but want someone to talk to that will accept you where you are at?

As we struggle with life’s inevitable challenges, sometimes we get stuck in survival mode and lose touch with our sense of peace, joy and wholeness. We may feel lost or overwhelmed, unable to change or move forward. We may feel defective in some way, disconnected from Self and others, or as if we are not seen or accepted for who we are. Having a safe, non-judgmental, confidential relationship in which to explore our thoughts, feelings, challenges and hopes can be deeply healing and help us to find our way. It would be my honor and privilege to provide this for you as an ally on your path to wholeness.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
