You may feel constantly distracted from the present moment or like you’re on autopilot. Our minds often hand us thoughts that are distressing and it’s very easy to become wrapped up and stuck in them! I enjoy working with folks to disempower negative thoughts and get back to the things and people that are important to them. Together, we’ll work on developing a more compassionate and non-judgmental understanding of how your relationships, culture, and oppressive experiences have shaped your behaviors. By reclaiming your narrative, we can forge a path towards meaningful change that's rooted in your values.

The process begins with exploring your own story – what brought you to this point, how you see yourself in the world, and the thought patterns that create your internal narrative.
Life can feel so hard sometimes - that is ok! Often the most challenging moments provide the space to slow down, appreciate all you have endured, and take steps to create truly meaningful and lasting change. Together, with kindness and a bit of humor, I will help to empower your resilience and capacity to live a joyful and fulfilling life. I am passionate about supporting both individuals and couples. My work is rooted in a holistic, person-centered approach to healing. I will treat you with empathy, create a non-judgmental environment in which you feel safe and heard, and work to understand your lived experiences.

I strive to be present, attentive, emotionally attuned, to bear witness to one’s narrative and experiences, and to provide individual clients with a safe space to unearth, process, and make sense of things in their life that have stymied or thwarted them, resulting in undesirable patterns of thought, behaviors, and or symptoms. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW - VA) (LICSW – D.C.) with 22 years of experience working with adolescents, young adults, adults, and older adults in both inpatient and outpatient medical and community settings.

I provide a sacred space for helping individuals navigate through the complexities of pain, grief, and trauma in order to return to themselves. We have an abundant capacity to be whole with the right tools. I bring my whole heart to therapy with my clients. I believe we are wired for connection and healing in relationship with each other. We aren't meant to navigate pain and life's trials on our own. It's through connection with others as we move through (not around) our pain that true healing begins.

If you have been frustrated by past therapy experiences, you’re not alone. Traditional therapy approaches don’t always work for those of us with ADHD, Autism, and other types of neurodivergence. That’s why I do things a bit differently. My approach is strengths-based, empowering, and neurodiversity-affirming. Instead of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, neuro-affirming therapy embraces the squareness. It recognizes that what works for one person may not work for another, and that's perfectly okay.

My approach to therapy is one that focuses on a collaborative relationship between therapist and client. Through a strong therapeutic relationship, I believe clients are able to work through their struggles in an emotionally, safe space that is nonjudgmental, honest and compassionate. The journey of working through struggle becomes an opportunity for growth and healing. Through the therapeutic process, we explore patterns and ways of gaining insight into struggles while also building practical coping skills for managing difficulties on a daily basis.

I specialize in working with professionals who struggle with knowing they are enough. My ideal client has challenges with being confident in relationships. They believe people just want them for their accomplishments and material rewards. They desire authentic relationships, but are frustrated, irritated and distrusting of people. They do not know how to distinguish between someone who truly likes them and someone who is using them. They are in search of a therapist that is solution focused and able to help them unpack the challenges with relationships and help them put new behaviors into action.

In our work together, we will identify and reach towards your fullest potential, build a sense of confidence and ease, and achieve deeper connections. These connections will include with yourself, your partner, family members, peers, and other members of your community. Some of these steps will involve making changes but many will involve noticing the strengths that you already possess! I will provide my knowledge and experience treating anxiety/social anxiety, burnout, depression, relationship conflict, identity concerns, social difficulties, grief, and more. I work with children 10 and older, teens, adults, and families.

Our careers and our sense of self are usually tightly linked, yet we don't always recognize this tie. This connection can have a big impact on how we relate to others in our lives. I would be honored to be your therapist as you navigate your personal or career challenges. Giving ourselves the space to explore and process our thoughts, feelings and needs is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves. Knowing we are not alone in this journey can be quite powerful.

Whether this is your first time considering therapy or you've had experience with it in the past, finding a therapist that feels like a good fit is paramount to making progress in therapy. Maybe you've stumbled on this page because you are struggling with depression/anxiety, are experiencing relationship conflict, or perhaps you've been recommended by someone you trust. While neither of us will know if we are a good fit until we've had a chance to meet, I would like to share a little about my work as a therapist.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
