I believe Forrest Gump said it best when he stated "Life is like a box of chocolates"-as life can be sweet and enjoyable; but it can also be bitter and painful. It can definitely send us on emotional roller coaster rides that are not fun. My approach to working with mental health is to meet people where they are and provide individualized care. It's about building and fostering relationships for growth. Similar to the analogy of chocolates, I believe every individual is unique and present with their own life experiences. Thus, there is no one size fits all, & mental health does not fit in a box.

Therapy is a personal, intimate journey towards self-understanding and self-acceptance. I have both education and life experiences that compliment each other to understand needs of clients. I am willing to meet you where you are at, both within dynamics of the client needs and also as far as location of appointments. I believe that my training in the field of social work has prepared me to provide you with tools that will complement your current treatment or to use as an alternative and allow you to move forward to find balance in your life.

My counseling style is welcoming and conversational. I am known for being upfront and honest and I tailor my approach to meet each individual’s needs. My therapeutic approach combines Person-Centered, Reality Therapy, Solution-Focused therapist, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioral, Dialectical Behavioral, and Somatic therapy depending on what you want or need.

As a therapist, it's my job to help clients solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives and diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues. My clinical approach begins with recognizing client strengths with a holistic approach; by incorporating all parts of an individual, from emotional to physical, mental to social, financial, and so on, we can create a plan individualized to you and your specific needs.

Alyssa Martin, MS, LAC is a South Dakota State Licensed Addiction Counselor and has a Master's of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from South Dakota State University. She has experience in working with adolescents and adults in intensive inpatient treatment and outpatient settings. She uses cognitive behavioral, solution-focused and motivational interviewing therapeutic techniques. She specializes in substance abuse, addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, and grief. She is currently employed at Black Hills Counselors and provides Substance Abuse evaluations, outpatient groups, DUI classes, individual, family and couples counseling sessions for adults and adolescents.

I have provided mental health services for over 9+ years to adults, couples, and 16+ who are struggling with mental health issues. I guide people in their healing of trauma including complex trauma, dissociative issues, depression, anxiety, grief, psychotic spectrum, and personality disorders. I will create a safe space of honesty and empathy. I will guide you to strengthen self-trust and empower yourself to solve issues within all your relationships, inside and outside of therapy. I believe that our minds and bodies are connected through thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

I have worked with individuals and couples who are seeking support and guidance to overcome challenges in their day to day life. They may be experiencing a range of symptoms such as constant worry, low mood, lack of motivation, difficulty communicating, or challenges concentrating. Recognizing the importance of their mental health, client is motivated and committed to actively engaging in therapy to improve their overall well-being. Their needs include a safe and non-judgmental environment where they can openly discuss their thoughts and feelings. They seek validation and understanding, as well as practical techniques.

Although I have specialized in the full spectrum of eating disorders for over 30 years, my passion is working with emotional eating/BED and weight-loss coaching. I have developed a program called "the glow approach" which will help you develop a healthy relationship with food, which means 1) putting food back in its place as nourishment for your body and learning which foods "work for you" for health and weight-loss; and 2) identifying what role(s) food plays in your life: a coping mechanism to manage feelings, avoid issues, fill a void, and/or self-medicate underlying mental-health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD.

I am an LMFT with over 30 years experience working with couples and individuals ages 12 and up addressing a wide range of issues. These include but are not limited to depression, anxiety, trauma, work challenges, grief and loss, addiction, aging, transitions, managing stress and relationship issues. She also serves as a clinical instructor at Sanford School of Medicine.
