It’s an ongoing privilege to empower individuals to overcome personal obstacles from the bumpy chapters of their lives. It is my goal to assist clients in bringing about change, healing, growth, and acceptance in their lives. I also believe that knowledge is a powerful transformative tool, which is why I incorporate bibliotherapy and psychoeducation in my therapy sessions along with cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga, and integrative medicine. You will have the autonomy to direct your own treatment because the outcome is in your hands.

My ideal client is exploring change and considering what it may look like. Whether that is change in their relationships, lifestyle, career, family life, social life, etc... They recognize that a change needs to happen. Their goal is to decrease stress from the current behavior that continues to go on and they desire to find a different way to deal with issues that come up in life. They know what needs to change and the thought of doing something different is scary and overwhelming.

I have been fortunate enough to come alongside children, adolescents, and adults, and help them through a variety of difficulties ranging from depression and anxiety to experiences with trauma, and more. My specialty ages range from elementary children to those in young adulthood.

Therapy is a personal, intimate journey towards self-understanding and self-acceptance. I provide a holistic approach to therapy in a safe and supportive environment in which you will be heard and respected. Together we will identify and develop your specific goals and choose which therapeutic approaches will be the most comfortable and effective. My hope is to gain a better understanding of you and how I can help you grow and heal from whatever difficulty or trauma you are facing. Together we will look at patterns of what has worked and what hasn't and create new ways to navigate life in a healthy, authentic way.

I believe success in therapy is linked to the importance of building a strong therapeutic alliance with clients. I achieve this relationship through a non-judgmental, gentle demeanor, and compassionate approach. My passion is working with people who may feel overlooked, forgotten, or left out. I love working with a variety of clients through the lifespan; with those needing support, help finding life purpose, and strengthening communication and relationships. I am also passionate about serving Autistic individuals, parents who have children with disabilities, adolescents, and navigating and managing positive coping skills.

I see the counseling space as an intentional time to process life — to be heard and feel validated. I identify primarily as a person-centered counselor, maintaining a congruent and empathic approach, all while viewing clients as capable experts on themselves. I also recognize the difficult times that we currently live in and acknowledge how systems and circumstances greater than ourselves can contribute to daily distress. I also enjoy exploring life’s larger, existential questions and helping clients find their own meaning in life.

With over 22 years of experience, I am skilled at assisting in working on many of the following areas: depression, anxiety, PTSD, postpartum depression, grief and loss, career counseling, premarital and family counseling, marital and couples counseling. I believe one of the most challenging things that you can do is to begin to understand your own story. We gather a lifetime of experiences which affect us in different ways. Holding on to past negative experiences prevents further exploration and healing. In a sense we get stuck in patterns of thinking and relating that hold us back from true potential and empowerment of our best assets.

During a first session, clients often comment how easy it is to talk to me. My priority is for you to get something out of our time together that impacts your daily life. This includes, but is not limited to: increased sense of security and self esteem; a more clear vision about your life (past, present, future); decreased symptoms related to anxiety/depression and past trauma; and an awareness of and influence over destructive patterns in your life. And for those seeking relationship counseling: better communication and renewed intimacy with your partner or spouse leading to enhanced satisfaction in family life.

There are times in our lives when we need help. Life experiences require us to make the decision to seek guidance from outside our immediate family and friends. Hello and welcome! My name is Joe and I'm a licensed mental health counselor at MK Counseling in Sioux Falls, SD. I've been practicing for approximately eight years and love what I do. My approach involves using clinically researched methods to help clients make meaningful life changes and find workable strategies for dealing with their thoughts and feelings. Unfortunately, there's no magic involved in the counseling process, and making changes takes effort from both of us and a willingness to try something new.
