By integrating my clinical training in mental health counseling with my training in mindfulness, somatic work and inner healing techniques, I help clients heal from past wounding.
I believe that as individuals make sense of their story they create the life they were designed for. Using trauma-informed modalities like Brainspotting and Internal Family Systems, I work with adults who want to heal from issues related to trauma, depression, anxiety, domestic/ interpersonal violence, grief, childhood neglect/ abuse, religious trauma, spiritual abuse, feeling stuck or sensing that something is just “not right."

With a deep understanding of the mind-body connection and the belief that healing begins by exploring the wisdom held within the body, my therapeutic approach is a blend of experiential and body-centered psychotherapies that integrate somatic techniques designed to help clients access and process emotions stored in the body.
Hi! I’m so glad you’re here! I am dedicated to creating a non-judgmental space where you can explore your emotions and beliefs on your journey towards self-discovery. With 16 years of experience working in the school setting, I enjoy helping adolescents/teenagers work through mental health challenges they may encounter. Additionally, I am passionate about helping women navigate unique life challenges - this can include motherhood, pre/post pregnancy complications, pre-term birth, perinatal loss, fertility issues, unexpected birth outcomes, endometriosis, PCOS, chronic pelvic pain, hormone imbalances, and/or (peri) menopausal.

Misty Smith's supervision, I operate from an acceptance and commitment therapy approach, incorporating trauma-informed and somatic (mind-body) interventions, mindfulness and yoga, play, and expressive therapies.
Taking the steps towards therapy can be uncomfortable, especially if this is your first time or if you just haven’t found the right fit yet. I am passionate in knowing that authenticity and connection can foster a safe space to be exactly as you are with understanding, non-judgment, and empowerment. I strive to see my clients through a multicultural lens, taking into consideration any social, racial, or cultural identities they feel are important to who they are as a person and how they relate to the world around them. I collaborate with my clients on how they would like to reach their goals or work through tough life transitions.

I have training and experience treating trauma (attachment and somatic focused EMDR) as well as the other surrounding experiences, such as depression and anxiety, that accompany both the hurting and the healing journey.
I consider it an honor to walk with people towards wholeness as he/she/they work on traumas associated with safety/security, identity, family, sexuality, faith (or deconstruction of faith) and unhealthy relationships. It is my hope to help each of my clients live freely, bravely and boldly as their true selves. I meet people where they are and guide them in both identifying and achieving their personal goals moving forward. I recognize the importance of community, connection and safety and help clients to set boundaries and find resources in order for these needs to be met along the way.

It has been wisely said that we are wounded in relationship AND we heal in relationship. This therapeutic relationship is an invitation for you to safely engage your internal experience and connect with what you most need or want for yourself. Out of our wounding, we develop patterns that emerge to help us navigate our environments. These patterns can also keep us from being fully present to our lives, leaving us feeling stuck, exhausted, anxious, ashamed, depressed, and lonely. My approach to therapy is led by kindness and curious exploration, supporting you as the client to identify the genuine longings under these patterns.

I utilize a unique combination of trauma informed therapies that focus on how the body processes painful experiences (EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Practice, Parts Work, and experiential activities).
Therapy is a journey into self-awareness. My private practice, Birmingham Therapy Services LLC, focuses on addressing presenting symptoms that can be a manifestation of our past and current experiences. Creating a safe environment is fundamental to therapeutic success. My role is to help the client identify what skills are needed in order for them to feel safe; this includes gathering an understanding of past and present experiences, resource building, coping skills development, psychoeducation, and discovering ones strengths. This approach is key in preparing a client's nervous system for the deep dive work.

I intimately understand the immense toll that long hours, complex responsibilities, and the ability to analyze and anticipate complex systems can take on physicians, executive leaders and mental health providers. Working across various sectors of healthcare and business administration has provided me with first-hand insight into the unique challenges these professionals face. I have witnessed how burnout and fatigue can insidiously undermine mental health and overall well- being of highly skilled professionals.

You and your partner are staring at a long, bumpy road ahead of you. Once, you were excited to go on this journey together. Now, part of you is terrified of what's to come. You want to make things work, but you're tired and weary of having the same fight over and over. You can't seem to agree on anything. Are we ready for marriage or have similar goals? What's the best way to raise our kids? Enter stress from outside the relationship- pressure from opinionated in-laws, ever-increasing demands from work, kids acting out at school. Just when you need your partner's support the most, you feel like your teammate has left you stranded.

My greatest desire is that each of my clients learn through the process of therapy how to walk in freedom. Freedom from depression, anxiety and present and past issues. I believe that we are a product of our past but that healing begins when we explore that past and begin to write a new story, a healing narrative. It is my belief that a productive therapeuitc relationship begins by providing a safe place, free of judgement and full of grace for the process and ourselves.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
