I am a family-oriented psychotherapist. I work individually with adults and youth, and with families together. How we see ourselves in our families - past, present, future - often provides the foundation for how we form our initial identity. Our identity, in turn, shapes how we act at home and in the world. The therapeutic process provides first a mirror to reflect our own sometimes hidden selves, and a light to gain unique insight into who we are and what we are here to do in this world.

We all have had times when we find ourselves contemplating our understanding of life and whether our life has progressed on the path that we had envisioned. We may be experiencing states of grief, self-doubt, and worry about ourselves, our relationships, or the condition of the world in general. It can often feel frustrating and overwhelming to accept this experience and we can find ourselves asking, "What did I ever do to deserve this; why me and why now?" These are often the scenarios when we require support and a new perspective with which to consider life's challenges.

I work with adolescents and young adults to strengthen awareness, joy, and sense of power in relationship to self, others, and systems you interact with. We are living in a tumultuous time in which many systems and institutions are actively constricting aliveness in our natural world and within us as individuals. This can manifest in feeling angry, apathetic, or powerless, or leave you searching for meaning and how to move forward. I work with individuals to cultivate your wild and authentic self as a beautiful form of vulnerability, resistance, and living wholeheartedly.

I believe that everyone, despite what label or diagnoses we have, deserves to be treated with fairness and empathy. We are not our past. I find great opportunity in challenging situations. My philsophy is that we are all doing the best we can based on our level of awareness. Every single being can work to expand on this. I see my role as working with you to shine a light on blind spots, thereby increasing this awareness. By doing so, we can address behavior and thought patterns which may have caused disruption in your life. Let's work to understand these parts of Self a little more.

Therapy is a collaborative journey of self discovery and integration. Its aim is wholeness. I draw on a variety of therapeutic frameworks to meet individuals where they are at and help them identify strengths and areas of growth in their life. Together we look at how thoughts, feelings and beliefs intersect with our life transitions and relational patterns and how they contribute to our sense of well being, or misalignment. By uncovering the needs under our feelings, we learn to take personal responsibility for expressing ourselves accurately and authentically, allowing us to feel heard, valued and understood.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
