As a therapist, I am concerned with the emotional or physical injuries that have happened to us. I’m interested in harm that is family based, societally based, or both. I see the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that don't serve us well now as having been required in our past for survival in a traumatic environment. Many of my clients are neurodivergent, and have been subject to harm ranging from ongoing lack of support to severe abuse because of this.
It’s important to me to work with client whose experience I'm in a position, as much as possible, to understand. I am part of a neurodivergent family, and have seen many times how those of us who are different or undervalued can be mistreated. I am deeply involved in issues of class, gender & neurodivergence.
Research shows that the relationship between therapist and client is often the most important factor in discovering and changing the behaviors that no longer serve us. With that as an essential goal, I find Internal Family Systems, psychodynamic and attachment work, Somatic Experiencing and ACT as excellent tools for becoming who we feel we actually are.
