I specialize in Somatic therapy for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. My work as a somatic therapist is oriented towards facilitating change and supporting a sense of belonging to yourself, your people, and the earth by listening to the language of your body-heart-mind. Being fluent in your body's language is a spiritual activism that synthesizes your inner metamorphosis with how you move in the world- allowing you to hear what was previously unheard, challenge injustice, deepen relational resources, and stay afloat amidst waves of grief and change.

I trust your intuition. You may have landed here because you're feeling something difficult, or not quite sure how you feel. I work with you to connect more to yourself and consequently more to others. I practice a trauma-informed approach that blends Depth-work with Mindfulness, DBT, Attachment theory, Somatic experiencing, & Psychodynamic lenses. I am also trained in EMDR which is used for reprocessing how our brain stores difficult experiences. I do not view symptoms as a pathology, but as information about our needs, our inner world, and our life's meaning.

Does it always feel like you run into challenges back to back without an end in sight? Do you ever worry or overthink about what you are supposed to be doing in life? Do you feel like what you are doing is not enough, or wish you could be doing more? Does previous experience cause you to shy away from trying something new?

You have been experiencing emotionally out-of-balance, blocked, stuck, or "off," or when you look at your future, you can't really see a way forward that interests you. You may relate to the idea of "being in limbo." Or else, you have experienced a loss so great it has seized your mental and emotional life and you feel there is no "space" to continue to carry out your daily responsibilities. Or else you are aware of an addictive or compulsive process, and to surmount this issue feels nearly impossible, so much that you don't even want to admit it is there.

I approach therapy by building a relationship where you feel able to explore all aspects of yourself, and your concerns, through experiencing me as warm, curious, empathic and authentic. Our life experiences, together with our neurobiology, cultural background, identities and life stage, all lead us to become who we are, but may not lead us to become who we wish to be. We may be in pain, experiencing anxiety; life may feel unsatisfying or stuck, and more. Psychotherapy offers an opportunity to make changes in our lives and relationships, so we can feel relief from pain, and so we feel more alive.

You’re a conscious, sensitive person, committed to justice and healing - but you find yourself feeling alone and confused about why you are continually struggling in relationships, or worse - you're worried intergenerational trauma has made being in healthy relationship out of reach for you. You’re intelligent and thoughtful, but you worry you're not reaching your potential because you’ve spent your life taking care of others and managing your anxiety/self doubt. You have a hard time trusting/knowing your own voice, and/or setting boundaries for yourself and others. I am passionate about working with LGBTQiA+ / BIPOC folks.

I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

I offer innovative solutions for complex challenges. Maybe people are using labels that seem chronic and don’t accurately reflect either what you are experiencing or what you’ve been through! Maybe you’ve had experiences in treatment that were not ideal or where you did not feel culturally respected or safe. When there is no simple answer for anxiety, depression, emotional pain, social exclusion, abuse or addictive behavior, maybe it is possible we can find one. I pay attention to things like complex or generational trauma and am prepared to help with things like dissociation, psychosis or hearing voices if that is needed.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
