I work with both individuals and relational systems surrounding relational concerns, ethical non-monogamy/polyamory, codependency, familial conflicts; as well as anxiety, depression, financial stress, and life transitions.
I know finding the right fit for a therapist can be a bit like shopping for a sofa: try a bunch before finding the one that makes you want to rest and stay a while. I’ll offer a few details that might make this process feel a little more directive. I am a licensed professional counselor and a marriage and family therapist candidate. My work is relational at its core, whether I am working with individuals, or larger units. Those who seem to get the most out of working with me are in touch with their internal emotional landscapes and interested in being active participants in their healing.

I am just regular old counselor of individuals as well! I have experience caring for a range of needs, from crisis and stabilization of acute mental health symptoms to overcoming addiction, codependency, and relationship conflicts.
Calm, Confident and Compassionate! What are you hoping for? A first step in what we aspire toward is having a clear vision of the goal. The next step is trusting there's a way to get there. You're here because you are wanting to take your next step, trusting that something new is possible. I believe safe, constructive therapeutic relationships 'reveal' and heal, in that they can provide new insights and opportunities to 're-wire' the brain. We were never meant to do things in our own strength, isolated from relationship and without help. Let's create some new possibilities on your journey.

In couples counseling, Kerry and Banjo both work from the Relational Life Therapy (RLT) model, as taught by Terry Real. We have been immersed in this valuable framework for years, engaging it both professionally and personally, and are currently in the final stages of RLT certification. We realize that by being in relationship with ourselves and others in a way that is accountable, empathetic, and vulnerable, we are able to flourish as partners, parents, and professionals. We hope to help you do the same in your relational life.

"...Psychotherapy...is as varied as human individuals. Treat every patient as individual as possible...the solution of the problem is always an individual one," wrote CG Jung. While living our lives we all go through periods of struggle and difficulty. From time to time help is needed in the form of counseling to assimilate and integrate the problems, and/or otherwise painful emotions. My approach to therapy is humanistic and client centered. I value each person as an individual. I will work collaboratively with you to nurture and support the healing and changes you envision for yourself.

- - - In Person Sessions Available - - - Deciding to go to therapy conjures up every TV or movie depiction of a client and therapist sitting in a dimly lit room while the client talks and talks about their problems. They never show the actual work that is necessary for real change to happen. They just show weekly sessions, and BOOM… an epiphany is made and they’re all better. Sadly, many of us have been in therapy on and off for years, mistakenly thinking that this was all that was necessary. You want more than that.

I believe psychotherapy is a project between two people where sources of emotional pain and anguish are discovered and revisited, where what has been denied, unimagined, forgotten, or come to be unspeakable can become imagined, felt and spoken. The process generates an understanding of ourselves that is vastly more dynamic than what our relationships, politics and culture allow, leading to the easing of suffering and the creation of new possibilities.

I work with people in transition or who are preparing for change. Artists, actors and writers. Those in bereavement. Or who are living with a catastrophic health-related diagnosis, recent or of long duration. Caregivers. Mental health interns who need to explore their own issues in order to practice mindfully. Folks who are using substances more than they want. People who want to decrease their distress but who also have a curiosity about its sources. People who want to talk with someone about the most important thing in the world, perhaps to discover what that is.

Codependency Therapists

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
