It is my honor to walk beside people during the more difficult times in their lives and help them make sense of their stories. As a trained outside voice, I am here to help you when you get stuck and disconnected. I believe that we are not meant to do this life alone — the more support we have, the stronger we are. When we get help, it lightens the load. My primary clinical interests are working with trauma, working with relationship problems and working with military families. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families.

When you are feeling overwhelmed but aren't sure how things can change, I can help. When you find that you keep making the same mistakes, doing things you promised yourself you would stop, I can help. Behavior changes are more than just applying logic to your situation. If it was only logic, you would have figured it out by now. I focus on how the brain processes experiences. I can provide the space to sort things out and finally change those old patterns.

Learning about ourselves is a lifelong process. We tend to think that we are steadfast beings, stuck in our ways. I believe that we are all capable of connecting deeper with ourselves and the world around us through curiosity, creativity, and relationship-building. Therapy hopefully becomes a place where you learn to care for and integrate each part of yourself as you navigate the complex dialectics of life: fear and courage, acceptance and change, beauty and pain. Contradictions are uncomfortable, but must co-exist. “I still don’t understand the play…” “It doesn’t matter, just keep telling the story” - Wes Anderson, Asteroid City

Whether it's turning to food for comfort, pushing away the people you love, or using alcohol/drugs; these patterns can feel overwhelming. I understand how challenging it can be to break free from these feelings, and I'm here to tell you that you don’t have to navigate this alone. While I specialize in trauma and addictions, I see a variety of other mental health concerns: depression, relationship concerns, narcissistic abuse, codependency, ADHD, general life transitions, anxiety, self-worth.

I have worked 19 years with adolescents and have much experience working with couples and individuals.
Are you using unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with your anxiety and/or depression? Increasingly, the pressures of life, complicated relationships, traumatic events which are or feel beyond our control are leading us to problematic emotional states. Frequently, negative emotions such as shame, anger or hatred, or envy and jealousy, link to negative self-talk, dictating our feelings, thoughts and actions. I find it is usually helpful to apply a holistic approach, working with the mind/body connection which counsels attention to the present moment rather than dwelling in the past or obsessing about the future.

The journey to emotional health begins with discovering and nurturing the authentic self. When we make choices that are inconsistent with who we are, our ability to participate in life, to love and work is compromised. This can often lead to avoiding the things that truly matter to us causing us to feel depressed or anxious. When this happens, we tend to avoid more. And the cycle continues. In my work, I help clients (ages 16+) re-engage with life focusing on their values and what matters most to them.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
