My background is psychodynamic, relational therapy, and attachment theory.
As a therapist and life coach, my goal is to help you feel both empowered and at peace with yourself and your life and to guide you on a positive path to growth and well-being. Through our work together, I seek to help you uncover your true self, find your voice, & align your values & life choices. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. Simultaneously I will introduce you to tools and strategies that may help you better navigate the stress and anxiety of life and hopefully enable you to experience greater peace, joy, and well being.

Psychoanalysis provides the most in-depth, long-lasting treatment. Ideal for the person who has tried medications and briefer therapies unsuccessfully. Like exercise and the violin, concentrated long work is required for lifelong growth in the ability to love, work and play, while containing suffering, loss and uncertainty. Quick fixes limited to a pill or briefer therapy, only if insurance pays, tend to be quite expensive long run. Psychoanalysis seeks to get at the underlying roots and meanings beginning in infancy and childhood that become recurrent problematic adult relationship patterns, internal conflicts and body issues.

Every person I serve has a unique story. While some clients experience challenges in just one area, most experience difficulty multiple areas (mental health, trauma, loss, addiction), creating a complex, vicious cycle if not all parts are addressed. The circumstances that bring someone to therapy do not come in 'neat little packages.' I enjoy sorting out the pieces with each client, getting to the root of the issue, and offering a combination of evidence-based therapeutic interventions that help clients finally begin to experience relief, and start living a happier, more fulfilled life.

You have been been facing difficulties but feel unable to continue struggling alone. Therapy is a good option because often issues are best solved within the context of a collaborative therapeutic relationship. Your difficulties may be the result of current stresses, changes in your phase of life, long-standing difficulties with relationships, or childhood loss or abuse that continues to pain you. My psychoanalytically-informed approach to short or long-term therapy is based on gaining insight into what issues may be interfering with your ability to work effectively, enjoy life or relate to significant others.

I tailor my approach to each individual, drawing from psychodynamic perspectives, attachment theory, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Therapy can help you understand how past experiences impact your daily life and relationships. By recognizing these patterns, we can begin cultivating lasting change in our interactions and relationships. Most of my clients want to improve their relationships, their sex life, or explore their identities or transitions. I specialize in sex and relationship therapy, enhancing intimacy and desire, improving differences in desire, and working through pain or dysfunction, particularly within the queer community. I also offer psychological evaluations to clarify diagnoses and collaborate on treatment recommendations.

My style is open, collaborative, and person-centered, informed by psychodynamic, relational-cultural, strengths-based, and attachment-based therapy approaches.
My name is Tyania (ty-an-nuh) and I am a Black, queer, cisgender licensed therapist (LCMHCA) offering individual therapy in Durham, NC. My approach is rooted in the idea that profound healing occurs in the context of relationships. Our lives are dictated by the relationships that we do or don’t have, and a large part of how we discover ourselves is through reflection and feedback - being seen and understood by another. Being your authentic self can be challenging for many reasons, which is why I strive to make our time together a place of refuge where you can be your true self (or have the space to figure out who your true self is).

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and provide psychotherapy to adolescents, young adults, and adults. My approach is warm and engaging, curious and authentic. I work collaboratively with my clients and maintain a compassionate and inviting stance. I continue to feel honored to engage in this work and bear witness to such courage and vulnerability. I practice from a relational, psychodynamic, and trauma-informed framework. This means that, together, we will think about how the experiences you have been through in your life have shaped who you are today and how you engage in the world.

I work primarily from a psychodynamic perspective, which means we will work together to explore the ways emotional experiences of the past affect your life and relationships today, and collaborate to create new possibilities for the future.
Beginning therapy and taking the chance to trust someone new is an act of great courage. You may find yourself seeking therapy because you’ve noticed that the strategies that you learned in the past to protect yourself from pain are causing pain in your current life and relationships. I particularly enjoy working with queer, trans, and questioning clients and their loved ones, individuals with anxiety, people dealing with grief, & young adults with difficulties in familial, friendship, romantic or sexual relationships. You can expect me to join our relationship with curiosity, kindness, and at times a new or challenging perspective.

I am a Physician with more than 9 years of experience practicing medicine. I believe that medications, while effective, have their limitations. I use Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis as a means to broaden the scope of how I can help my patients heal. In therapy, you and I will make a sincere effort to explore your life and past experiences, while trying to understand how all of it affects you. Why does it feel like something stops us from being content with our lives? Why can’t we seem to escape the repetitive patterns of self-destructive behaviors? Why does it feel that we are somehow stuck?

I use a collaborative therapeutic style to explore what works for you, integrating primarily relational psychodynamic, narrative, and somatic approaches.
If you’re reading this, you're probably considering the vulnerable, messy, beautiful, healing work of therapy. You may also be: feeling “stuck” by inner conflict and uncertain of what’s next, high-achieving and grappling with a harsh inner critic, feeling out of sync with your values or how you want to live your life, feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, feeling unheard or seeking deeper connection in your relationships, or have engaged in therapy and learned helpful skills but didn't get to the root of your concerns. Maybe you're a graduate student or LGBTQ+ person wanting to process the varied challenges and pleasures of life.

I have an eclectic approach to treatment that include psychodynamic psychotherapy, CBT, Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress, and solution focused therapy.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have worked with adolescents, adults, and families for over 10 years. As a therapist, I believe that we have most of the tools we already need to make change. Therapy is simply a place where these tools can be identified and strengthened. I also believe people make lasting change through interpersonal relationships. Effective therapeutic treatment occurs through a meaningful, empowering, and reparative relationship. In therapy, I focus on relationships and how these impact our past & present relationships. I have experience with trauma, anxiety, depression, and attachment issues.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
