Throughout our lifetimes, we experience the world, delightful and painful, through our senses. Stress and trauma become stuck in our minds and bodies. A tough protective skin forms that keeps out pain, but also blocks joy. By slowing down and involving our bodies in the work of therapy, the dynamic display of our emotions finds resonance and calming, the mind and body unwind, and insight naturally arises about ourselves, relationships, and experiences. By including body, mind, and spirit, we tend the whole person. By partnering with the natural world, we invite resources that comfort, guide, and inspire us.

I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced complex trauma. My approach to psychotherapy is collaborative and non-pathologizing. Clients often find me because of my experience as a Certified Internal Family Systems Therapist or Certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. I use experiential models that take us beyond traditional talk therapy by slowing down, connecting with what is happening on the inside, offer healing to the wounded parts, and connecting with inner resources. Client’s often report an increase sense of self-compassion, calmness, clarity & confidence in themselves.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy, often referred to as ART, is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies but shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly (usually within 1-5 sessions). Clients with depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance use issues, history of abuse, grief, and many other mental health and/or emotional issues can experience significant benefits beginning in the first session. Accelerated Resolution Therapy is not hypnosis and is different from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).

One side of this work may involve pursuing wisdom, guidance and support. The other, involves pursuing healing into our deepest self. Some concepts to explore are... How do you make sense of and think about your world and self? How do you experience and manage your emotional world, what are your survival styles and patterns in relationships, distress and behavior? In what ways do you carry emotional pain and trauma on a body level, impacting you in known and unknown ways? I'm trained as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner to work with the release and resolution of trauma that can be trapped in one's physiology and nervous system.

Trauma has found its way into the lives of so many people in our community today.
My ideal client might be afraid to begin with. They may think I will tell them they are crazy, or look at them in shock for what they tell me. When I reassure them their trauma has taken a toll, but they are not crazy, and I can help them, they will relax. They will learn to trust me and open up. By opening up about their lives and what they have been through and working through their trauma, they will come out on the other side realizing they no longer need to experience the pain, and can experience the joy they always strived for.

I find that we seek out therapy when what has worked is no longer working and we are feeling stuck, which calls us to understand ourselves differently and move towards change. While change can be uncertain, therapy can offer a deeper understanding of your authentic self and what you need. I have a particular interest in working with individuals experiencing life transitions such as academic and career change, family of origin transitions, family changes, grief and loss, interpersonal distress, trauma and relational concerns. I'm passionate about connecting with teens and adults of all backgrounds and identities.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
