I have a relationship-driven approach to helping clients live happier, more fulfilling lives. I rely mainly on psychodynamic, humanistic and existential perspectives. I have experience helping clients process grief, loss and trauma; strengthen relationships; set boundaries; and achieve general life satisfaction. I work primarily with adult individuals, couples and groups. My work with couples is informed by training in the Gottman Method and Imago. For couples in which one partner is leaning out, considering divorce but not completely sure it's the best path, I offer Discernment Counseling.

Overall, I apply a humanistic and non-judgemental approach in identifying clients' current challenges and how they can begin to address them.
I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families. When thinking about the stages of change, I prefer to meet clients where they are; and am willing to work at a pace they feel comfortable with at the start of treatment. Individuals come to treatment with a myriad of goals and needs. Specific issues may be difficult to pinpoint. However, one of my goals in the overall process is to see clients who are open to changing their current dynamic or patterns, with the hope of a more favorable outcome.

Many of us have trouble making decisions or deepening relationships, because we learned to connect with others needs above our own. While this was adaptive, it can lead to disappointment and resentment. I work with individuals and couples stuck in this cycle. Since change doesn't occur spontaneously, time is dedicated to your patterns and how they are impacting your relationships both positively & negatively.

Patients tell me they feel stronger and more confident through our work, and their relationships and careers often show the benefits. Together, we can examine and explore your life. We can untangle your strengths, conflicts and questions. We can identify things you keep doing even though they're not working for you. When we find issues interfering with your goals, passions, or relationships, we can work together toward change. More info at tppsych.com

If you have been struggling with a health concern such as pain, insomnia, or GI distress, you may feel demoralized by the limitations of medical treatments for many health issues. You may not know that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a number of medical conditions. As a clinical health psychologist, I specialize in chronic illness, chronic pain, disorders of brain-gut interaction (DGBIs), health anxiety, insomnia, and stress related to navigating the health care system. Therapy can help you to quiet the brain’s natural threat response to symptoms, foster resilience, and embrace life once again.

My passion is helping women who do too much and love too much. If you’re a woman who is feeling worn out, worried, and needing to regroup, I want to work with you. Together we’ll focus on helping you get quality sleep, clear your head of negative self-talk, and figure out who told you you don’t measure up; learn where this huge need to be everything to everyone came from so we can pull it out by its roots. And then the fun part begins–learning to do nice things for yourself, finding your joy, shaking resentments, learning to enjoy saying “no,” and living the life you want for yourself. It's time to get started with a clear plan.

I am both an art therapist and licensed professional counselor in private practice in Washington, DC. I teach courses to graduate students in art therapy and counseling. Although I specialize in helping both children and adults with issues of trauma, family, and relationship, people bring a wide range of concerns from personal growth to serious mental illness. Before entering private practice, I directed an activities therapy department in an army medical center where military members and their families were hospitalized for personality and mental disorders. At this facility, I also worked with children and adolescents on a medical ward.

Please note - I am only accepting clients who are age 13+. I am an art therapist and counselor, and my specialties are complex-PTSD, PTSD, DID, and neurodevelomental disorders. Life changes after trauma. Childhood trauma can set us up to have difficult relationships and a weakened identity. Navigating the world can feel uncertain. Safety may be elusive or non-existent. The wonderful news is that therapy works. In terms of individuals with nuerodevelopmental disorders, I particularly specialize in individuals with a co-occurring psychotic disorder.

My work is built on the belief that people naturally want to heal and grow; sometimes we just need someone to help us channel those instincts for change. We need a space to hear our thoughts outside of our heads, a space to observe and examine our feelings and what we hold true about ourselves. You are the expert in your life, and the question I ask myself as a therapist is how can I provide a space and relationship that you can use for personal growth. Some of the most important values that I focus on bringing to that relationship are trust, openness, and curiosity.

As a Certified Nature-Informed therapist, I integrate nature-based therapeutic methods into my work with clients. This evidence-based approach integrates the restorative power of the natural environment with other established treatments. Once we’ve developed rapport in the office, I offer outdoor sessions held walking and/or sitting at parks and on trails in Takoma Park and Rock Creek Park. Pushing beyond traditional confines of a physical counseling office or telehealth, together we can utilize space and time in nature to boost emotional regulation and best help work through anxieties, challenging times, and life transitions.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
