When we tend lovingly to our grief, transitions like death, separation, divorce, and mid-life challenges can actually be invitations to live more fully.
When the unwanted or unexpected happens, it is as if the whole world has imploded. If left untended, grief can show up in ways that don't serve us. We can lose ourselves in alcohol, sleep, work--anything to numb the pain. Some of us lash out or withdraw from the people and things that give our lives meaning (e.g., family, friends, community). It doesn't have to be this way! I specialize in helping people whose lives have been affected by illness or death, separation or divorce, and mid-life issues (parenting struggles, caring for aging parents, etc.).

My practice is dedicated to providing a thoughtful and supportive space for individuals, couples, and families to explore loss without the need to fix it or remove it.
Grief can leave you feeling isolated, misunderstood, confused and wondering if what we are experiencing is “normal.” You may believe you are supposed to move on, get over it, or hurry up the grieving process. And yet, what you are experiencing, physically, emotionally, and mentally can leave you with little clarity on how to go forward. Our work together is about helping you process the complexities of your grief, to give you coping skills that honor what you've lost.

Experience tells me that grief and loss can feel like we are dropped into an unknown land.
I specialize in grief and loss, medical trauma, PTSD, anxiety and shame issues. I have over 22 years experience working in both the mental health field as well as hospice and palliative medicine. My work with clients is marked by curiosity and compassion. I believe that grief is something that cannot be fixed, but it can be navigated and supported. I serve my clients by providing education, empathetic listening, and strategies for coping with grief. If there are elements of trauma within one's experience, I use Lifespan Integration as a means help the brain rewire so that the triggers are no longer too activating.

My patients are usually hard working adults who have run into some tough times or are experiencing difficult emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and addictions. I focus on using a strengths-based and harm reduction approach, which views each person as an individual with unique strengths and challenges. Using this approach values the person and facilitates a customized treatment plan for the individual. My role is not to judge you or your behaviors, but to act as an independent consultant for improving your mental well-being and quality of life.

We all seek increased meaning, along with deeper purpose and stronger connections. But change can be hard! When pain or fear predominate, we are unable to tolerate stress or to be spontaneous. Together, we will address self-limitations like shame, people-pleasing, or perfectionism. I look forward to working with individuals facing life transitions including grief and loss, divorce, marriage, career change, maintaining recovery, gender assignment exploration or those seeking deeper meaning.

Therapy can serve many purposes and often begins as one-thing, evolving into another. Whether a major life change, deep suffering, grief, or curiosity brings you to therapy, we all have much to gain in understanding ourselves better. Life's complexities can make it difficult to unweave our own comprehension of the abilities and power we wield. Some of our greatest distresses arise when we feel out of control and uncertain how to bring about change.

The last few years has brought on a large amount of change. Change that may have caused you to feel isolated, anxious or even scared. The loss of control has left many of us yearning to hug friends and/or family for comfort. My hope is to establish a safe, judgment free environment for you to explore the grief and anxiety you may feel. It is in these contexts that we can begin to discover new levels of honesty, awareness, and hopefully self-compassion and a greater sense of alignment with our new realities. I take the role of active listener, reflecting back to you patterns or themes that I notice in the stories or experiences you

It is my privilege to be with people as they sort through their difficulties (and joys); may it be relationship struggles, areas of grief and loss, life transitions, feelings of anxiety, depression, or an array of other life circumstances that are part of the human experience.
Choosing to see someone for counseling is a courageous step. I believe we all can benefit and grow from having an objective person looking at our lives with us. I am honored to have this role in the lives of others.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
