There's a part of you, deep down, that believes that you will never be enough. Smart enough, attractive enough, successful enough, likable enough, good enough. I want to tell that fearful part of you that I recognize it's trying to protect you from getting hurt. So you never put yourself out there or take a risk that could be life-changing. I know how hard it is to take a leap of faith, because stability and monotony is safe. If you don't try to go after what you want, you can't fail. And failing is really, really scary!

I am certified in EMDR, trained in Level 1 of IFS, and work from a person-centered, attachment, feminist, and strengths-based approach.
I am currently accepting new clients, both in person and through Telehealth. Sometimes what we need most is to be seen, heard, and appreciated just as we are. Through my own personal counseling and my professional training, I’ve witnessed the power of healing through connection with another and this is the foundation of my work as a therapist. When we are able to be vulnerable with another person, to be truly seen and heard it can be liberating. I bring this approach to my work with a variety of concerns including trauma, anxiety, depression, identity exploration, attachment wounds, emerging adulthood, and substance use.

I believe that we are all on a similar journey in life....to be fully connected and authentic people, and to integrate the different parts of ourselves so that we can experience love and joy and meaningful relationships. In our work together it is my hope that we can explore the different parts of yourself that keeps you from these connections and explore what it means to feel safe. Through exploring shame and early childhood trauma, depression and anxiety, as well as body love and acceptance, we can work together to support a deepening of your self-awareness and find compassion and connection to heal and nurture your deepest self.

Watching your child struggle with low self-esteem, anxiety, and perfectionism can be heartbreaking. You want nothing more than to see them thrive and to feel good about themselves, but sometimes it can feel like you’re not sure how to help. That’s where I come in. Hi there! My name is Kathryn but I go by Katey. I'm a licensed therapist specializing in helping preteens and teens overcome all aspects of perfectionism. Before my clients came to see me, they felt inadequate and less than. They were certain they would never be good enough, no matter how hard they tried.

I have had extensive training in various therapy models and interventions over the years and find that my work is richly influenced by Feminist Theory, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), and art-based interventions.
I am truly passionate about working with people who are ready to journey into counseling and invest in themselves. I know this can be unfamiliar terrain for many individuals, but my compassionate presence eases this discomfort. I have over 20 years of experience helping individuals suffering from stress, anxiety and depression, difficult life transitions, partner relational issues, interpersonal relationship difficulties, past trauma and abuse, spiritual development, perfectionism, shame, poor body image and low self-esteem. I value the therapeutic relationship where I cultivate a safe space for transformation, hope, and healing.

I embrace feminist therapy by challenging traditional methods that often miss the mark on the unique experiences and challenges we face.
Feminist rage? Feeling disconnected from others and yourself? It’s no wonder. Women are often pressured to juggle many roles, face higher scrutiny, and have their autonomy challenged (e.g., abortion, reproductive rights). The constant buzz of stress, anxiety, depression, and lingering thoughts from past experiences or trauma can be overwhelming. On top of that, cyclical challenges like PMS and PMDD can amplify that buzz into a scream. If you’re asking yourself, "How did I get here? Who even am I? What do I want? Where do I go from here?"—let’s dive in and laugh and cry our way to connecting with the most authentic you.

Hi! Going to therapy can be an intimidating process, and my goal is to create an authentic and accepting environment to help you feel seen, understood, and give you the confidence to try things differently. Vulnerability can be one of the scariest, most liberating and empowering acts, and takes courage – so I commend you for being here, wherever you are in your process.

As a feminist, I strive to address the social, familial, and cultural influences on the mental health of each client.
My professional interests are focused on depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, body dysmorphia, relationships issues, gender identification/expression, and women's issues. I seek to help people develop awareness of the impact of trauma, loss, attachment and abuse on their development, and the resulting negative and harmful beliefs; to create and practice adaptive and healing skills; and to find personal empowerment through the therapeutic experience.

You are not alone. Many of us who come from marginalized backgrounds experience a healthcare system that doesn’t believe us, take us seriously, or understand us. We can feel isolated in our pain, and the very system that is supposed to provide healing instead causes us more harm. This is why I approach therapy through a racial justice, feminist, disability justice, LGBQIA+ and TGNC affirming, and intersectional lens to ensure that your lived experience is both validated and respected.

I do this by utilizing an eclectic, person-centered, feminist-based, approach that allows the client to take the lead and advocate for their needs.
Primarily, I focus on neurodivergent psychological assessments. I have a long history of working with autistic and adhd individuals and truly enjoy my work with this population. I also love working with the lgbtq community and providing families with a safe and welcoming environment throughout the assessment process. Additionally, I am happy to work with adults, teens, and children. Regarding individual counseling, I have a special interest in working with the LGBTQ+ community, women's issues, and trauma survivors. However, I am not currently taking therapy clients at this time.

Technically speaking, I use an integrative approach that includes accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), internal family systems (IFS), attachment theory, feminist theory, polyvagal theory, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness.
Change is hard. Our nervous systems can interpret even the most well-intentioned changes as threats, which means sometimes it can be difficult to understand why we feel or behave the way we do. I deeply respect that, as social creatures, we are wired to process transitions through connection with others. I often find that what my clients believe are character flaws are actually intelligent coping responses—they served an important purpose at one point but are no longer helpful in their current lives.

Are there parts of yourself that you're ready to take a closer look at? Are you a student in need of support? Are you concerned about your substance use? Have you noticed patterns coming up in your relationships with your partner and/or family that you aren't sure how to address? This is work we can do together in bite-sized chunks so that you aren't having to uproot your entire life in order to become the person you know you are at your core. My job is to see you for who you really are and remind you of that when you're unable to see yourself. I am here to help you make the changes you haven't yet been able to make on your own.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
