Life is hard. Three simple words that are at the root of why people seek out therapists. I believe that the vast majority of people are doing the best they can in life. When our thoughts, words and actions aren’t in sync with our values or expectations of ourselves, that can lead to depression, anxiety and other distressing emotions. Sometimes we find ourselves in deep distress due to the actions of others. I find great joy in helping others sort through that complex tangle of emotions, thoughts and behaviors in order to come to a resolution–to figure out how to move forward in a manner that brings them peace.

Life is full of challenges. Some challenges we can navigate our way though and some challenges we need help with through therapy. I think of therapy as one on one education especially meant for the client. With many therapy models to draw from, I take an integrated approach to therapy. I choose the most appropriate model for each individual client. I have, also, been trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). All in all, therapy can help a client to once again find joy in the journey.

My passion for ending suffering in the world began when I was a little girl and my dad read to me the story of “The Little Match Girl” by Hans Christian Andersen. I can still see my little hands reaching out to that little girl who was hungry, cold, and forgotten. I have witnessed much suffering over the years which has deepened my desire to help others. I have worked with indigenous women in the jungles of Costa Rica and Guatemala, assisting them feed their children and empowering them through micro-loans. I have spent time on the streets of Birmingham helping the forgotten homeless, those suffering from AIDS, and drug addictions.

I have seen more resiliency than I ever thought imaginable. Both through teens and older adults. I specialize in working to heal current and past trauma. I have worked with the abused/neglected youth and adults, behavioral issues, domestic violence, postpartum depression, addiction, anxiety, depression, borderline, PTSD, bipolar and more. Throughout all of my work, I have learned how unique each individual is and how unique each of their healing processes are. I believe in the power of the mind and sometimes the need to heal that mind to find the power hidden beneath.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works from a humanistic approach through a trauma informed perspective. This means I recognize how your past experiences impact you each day, and that trauma may have shattered your concept of self, other people, or the world. I will work to help you change how you experience emotions, instead of just eliminating or reducing them.

OCD and anxiety related disorders can feel like a game of whack a mole in which after solving one worry another one pops up quickly to replace it. For an individual suffering from one of these disorders and for their loved ones this game can feel exhausting, frustrating, and impossible to win. I provide telehealth services in Utah, and Idaho.

Some of the most difficult and scary steps to take are those beginning steps of change. Often times these steps are out of one's comfort zone, and the first instinct is to want to hide, run or give up entirely. Life never promises or guarantees a pain free existence! However, with first steps and the courage to try, there can be a guarantee to oneself, to learn to take on challenges, struggles, pain, hurt, hang-ups, habits, addictions, etc. At this point its ok and have acceptance of one's difficulties and to embrace it. It's possible with the right guidance, support, and building of skills to rebuild what's been broken/is breaking.

I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults helping them cope in a healthy manner with life stressors and difficult life transitions with a specific focus in trauma therapy. Trauma therapy can include many things such as: seperation(s), divorce(s), grief/loss, adoption(s), navigating foster care, car accident(s), major life changes and much more. I believe therapy should be holistic, meaning there are many ways to do therapy, and every individual is unique. Each approach I use is intended to expand on the clients existing strengths using evidence-based interventions whenever possible.

Therapist focusing on trauma, skill building, and mediation. I believe mental health is simple, yet it can be frustrating because it is also complex. Too often we look for magical or quick fixes for problems when the solutions are very common. Usually it is a number of things that create the problem, not just one contributor and often our society treats the symptom not the cause. As a society we should be focusing on preventative health, getting in front of the problem, and not waiting until it has already occurred to seek help. Having said that... there is always a solution, it just may not be what you expected.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
