Life is hard. Three simple words that are at the root of why people seek out therapists. I believe that the vast majority of people are doing the best they can in life. When our thoughts, words and actions aren’t in sync with our values or expectations of ourselves, that can lead to depression, anxiety and other distressing emotions. Sometimes we find ourselves in deep distress due to the actions of others. I find great joy in helping others sort through that complex tangle of emotions, thoughts and behaviors in order to come to a resolution–to figure out how to move forward in a manner that brings them peace.
Sometimes the distress we are experiencing comes from trauma–recent or from our past–that continues to affect the way we see and interact with the world around us. As a trauma certified therapist, I can help you let go of the fight, flight or freeze responses that characterize the need for self-protection even when no danger is present.
For some people, counseling feels like they're admitting to weakness. I understand that. I used to be that person. As a former Army Officer and military spouse as well as a mother to 3 soldiers I believe I have some insight into the ‘tough it out’ mentality.
