I will be utilizing DBT and mindfulness to help you increase self esteem and gain new skills to manage stress.
Do you struggle with self compassion or allowing yourself to feel your emotions? I empower individuals to better understand their emotions and treat themselves with patience and kindness. Together we can work on identifying barriers that make it difficult to sit with your emotions and observe them without judgment.

My theoretical framework comes from integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Internal Family Systems, mindfulness, self compassion, and shame reduction into what the client says is working for them.
Hello, I'm Kristina! I believe wellness has different definitions and paths for each person, and I love being a part of my clients' journey in creating, adjusting, and respecting that picture. My concept of quality therapy includes discovery, personally defined healing, creating new connections, and finding ways to take self-compassionate action. I enjoy art, media, and literature and integrate this into my work whenever possible. Clients and colleagues have described me as calm, compassionate, curious, and a bit nerdy. I embrace these identities in my role and enjoy working with a variety of communities and identities.

I primarily focus on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills, mindfulness, narrative therapy, and CBT.
Life is hard and it doesn't always let us catch our breath before the next thing comes. Perhaps you need some help finding a solution for the next step or maybe you just need someone to listen to you and show some empathy. Sometimes you don't understand why you get so angry, irritable, or emotional about the small inconveniences that come up in life and maybe you'd like to be more mindful and in control of your emotions/reactions. Whether it be someone to listen to you, someone to find a solution with, or just to get back control of your life so you can be the expert of it, I can help.

I use cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy, EMDR, and person-centered treatment.
As the world has grown smaller with access to so much instant information, children and families are feeling overwhelmed. As families try to cope from this place of overwhelm, their relationships and connections can suffer. Childhood trauma can also play a part in the way we shape our families. Recognizing and understanding generational trauma is the first step in creating your family differently. Sometimes adults need help in order to help their children.

My gift as a therapist is a delicate exploration of what hurts, and using effective treatment modalities (CBT, DBT, ACT and EMDR, etc), I share education and strategies to gently restructure my clients' ways of thinking and of understanding themselves and their world.
Hello, I'm Dr. Sharen M. Pierre Waters, LCSW. I'm a Mental Health & EMDR Therapist, having achieved a PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I’ve served clients in South Central Indiana for 20+ years, providing mental health and hospice care. The joy of my work as a therapist is to walk gently beside my clients toward wellness and growth: (1) to inspire hope that change is possible, (2) to guide clients to the truth that we are worth the effort to rise, and (3) to share education - or light - to enable change to happen. My effectiveness is widely respected, as is my warmth and compassion.

I offer CBT, DBT, TIC, and ACT as modalities used as interventions.
As your therapist, we will process anxiety, depression, past traumas, reroute negative behaviors, & learn how lived experiences impact the way you view the world currently. My clients often seek therapy because they are wanting to uncover the meanings behind their emotions; together, we are often able to uncover the meaning behind these emotions by better understanding past traumas encountered. Only then, can we replace negative behaviors that have stemmed from these traumas, together. I provide a safe & genuine space for LGBTQ clients & practice from an inclusive & client-centered perspective.

Congratulations for seeking therapy! I am taking referrals and can do so quickly. Many people feel reluctant to seek therapy because of the assumption that you should be able to deal with all problems yourself. Most people experience improvement in mood and anxiety problems as they work with a therapist. I believe I am easy to talk to and listen carefully. I also have over 40 years of experience and have developed skills in a variety of problem areas. If you see me and we establish a plan, you will be in the driver's seat as far as how much you need and how long you need it. AND YES - I offer weekend and evening appointments.

I believe it is important to meet the client where they currently are to develop a strong therapeutic relationship. I strive to provide a warm and nurturing environment. I believe it is important to provide evidence-based approaches while providing appropriate psychoeducation so clients understand why they are learning these tools. You deserve to feel accepted with where you are right now. I believe in setting small, realistic goals to build self-confidence and help you feel more in control.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
