Life can be difficult... Stress from work, relationships, and other life experiences may leave a person feeling alone or lacking support. This stress often has adverse and unwanted effects on overall well-being and is important to address. The counseling relationship provides an opportunity to be supported in a safe environment with a counselor who is open, responsive, and accepting of you and your lived experiences. Counseling can be seen as a relational tool in working towards the life you've been wanting for yourself, whether it looks like managing mental health symptoms or realizing your goals.

I believe all therapy is relationship based and as a therapist I'm part of the client's experience of relationship in the world.
The client is the authority about his/her needs and hopes. If we work together I believe we can achieve the goals we agree upon as we come to know each other. I've worked with couples, families, organizations, and friends in resolving relationship issues for 20 years. I believe attachment issues, trauma and disturbing memories influence our sense of self and can effect how we interact and respond or react in all our relationships. Trauma is personal, some examples are the death of a pet, infidelity, death, war, natural disasters, sexual trauma, growing up in a unstable environment.

I work with couples and individuals seeking help with trauma, depression, anxiety and relational issues.
My clients are open to possibilities and want to see growth and positive change but often feel stuck and unsure how to move into healthier ways of being. My goal is to create a therapeutic environment where clients can safely explore present and past stressors and trauma while simultaneously developing hope to move forward. Through this exploration, my clients discover and apply new tools that support and empower their journey. It is through wholehearted living that humans find joy and fulfillment. We reach this by releasing unhelpful patterns, embracing authenticity, and healing our relationship with ourselves and others.

It's important to acknowledge that we cannot always be everything to our partner, nor can our partner be everything to us over multiple decades.
I have been working with couples and families for over 25 years, specializing in relationships. I work with couples who want to improve their relationship, figure out where it's going, or end it with as much peace as possible, with families where there has been divorce and child behavior problems, and with individuals who have anxiety or depression. Therapy is based in the present and is short-term. You should see results quickly, and if you don't, something about the way therapy is going needs to change. Your time and money will not be wasted.

Through that process we can develop a trusting relationship to facilitate insight and growth.
We all encounter situations that challenge our abilities and throw us off balance. This is what it means to be human. I believe we all possess the ability to work through these situations and move forward in healthier, happier, and stronger ways. Sometimes it just requires a trained professional to offer a new perspective. My job is to work with you to discover your path forward by offering support, new ways of thinking, and education while tapping into strengths and resources you already possess. Please give me a call and we can get started to get you back on track in your life.

Maybe you have even experienced betrayal by your spouse.
if you are struggling in your relationships, I'm here for you. I believe that part of the meaning of life is to love and be loved, and when we aren't able to experience this fully, we suffer. Life experiences can leave us feeling inadequate, not enough, lost, afraid, stuck. Maybe we feel trapped in the same negative relationship patterns, or unable to trust and get close to others. My goal is to help you become more aware of why you do what you do, so that you have the freedom to make new decisions for your future. I want you to have the freedom to experience the intimacy and love we're designed for.

Navigating relationship issues can be challenging and deeply personal.
Relationships are at the heart of our well-being, shaping how we connect, communicate, and thrive. As a therapist specializing in attachment, I help individuals and couples navigate the complexities of their relationships. Our attachment styles play a pivotal role in how we relate to partners, friends, family/children, colleagues, and even ourselves, often influencing our experiences with trust, communication, boundaries, and intimacy. When distress arises in these connections, it can lead to increased anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation, highlighting the profound impact our relationships have on our emotional well-being.

I specialize in working with couples in all stages of their relationships - from those who are dating or engaged, to newly married or navigating life with children or facing issues related to blended families, to those who have been together for decades. I also work with individuals navigating divorce, helping them process the challenges that come with that journey so they can come out on the other side in a healthy way. When clients arrive at the first session nervous or ambivalent about whether counseling can really help, I focus on putting them at ease and building confidence in their own ability to create the change they want.

When I work with couples, we focus on building a safe and secure relationship, rather than "fixing" the problem or mediating whatever the fights are about.
I work with individuals, couples, and groups who believe personal change is possible and valuable in their lives. I use an emotion focused approach, as put forth in the work of Dr. Les Greenberg, and have received formal training in Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. I believe that people are agents of their own positive change, and that many are unaware of how emotions relate to their thoughts and behavior. My clinical practice has taught me to respect the experience, worldview, and value system of each individual without imposing my own. I am an LGBTQ+ ally.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
