I am a psychologist with 40 years experience in group, individual and couples therapy. Those who see me are "normal" women and men with relationship issues that get in the way of having richer, more fulfilling lives. These issues may interfere with finding and maintaining an intimate, supportive and vibrant relationship. They may also interfere with self-confidence, parenting and career success. Compared to most therapists, I am very active, involved and personal in therapy. I do not just sit back and listen and I do not just give advice. I go beyond listening to confront and motivate patients to change.

Everyone needs support during difficult times in their lives, whether they are dealing with relationship issues, stress at home or work, or feelings of depression and anxiety with or without a clear cause. It is during times like these that therapy can help. Through our work together I will provide a safe space for painful memories and emotions to be explored and work with you to gain a deeper understanding of how these experiences continue to shape you today. Together we will work to help you develop new coping skills and bring an enhanced level of self-awareness to your life.

I've been providing psychotherapy for over twenty-five years. I am passionate about this work and have helped many people change their lives for the better. I believe in a person's ability to make their life as full and rich as they want it to be. Therapy can help you get what you need and want in your relationships, work, and other areas of life. I am easy to talk to and bring a lot of warmth and caring to therapy. I sometimes use innovative approaches including walking in nature with clients, hypnotherapy, pet therapy, and writing/art therapy.

I have been providing individual, couples, and group psychotherapy for over 25 years. Typically, people enter therapy because they are having problems in their relationships. Successful psychotherapy must focus on helping develop more fulfilling and substantial interpersonal connections. Facilitating a client’s capacity to lead a richer and more emotionally balanced life is the objective. The therapeutic relationship is the road traveled, and enables the client to understand the choices they have made, the associated positive and negative consequences, and the freedom to make new, more effective and satisfying life decisions.

If you’re looking for therapy, there is a possibility that you've been experiencing the pain and challenges that come with being human – likely more than the joy and fulfillment that also come with life experiences. Together, we'll work on understanding your pain and challenges so that we can identify solutions and ultimately help you find relief. As your therapist, I will help you engage in curiosity over the multidimensional nature of your experiences – including exploration of issues related to race, gender, sexuality, disability, and class. You may find exploration of these issues integral to understanding your experiences.

I work with individuals and couples, as well as children, in both DC and Chapel Hill. I do best with adults who are educated or reflective: many are scientists, artists, health and business professionals, or psychotherapists, and some are not pursuing conventional achievement. Some see me for family or work problems, some for help dealing with a chronic health issue or a loss, some to change longstanding emotional and interpersonal patterns involving anxiety, anger, or intimacy. We may try quick and simple approaches first, because sometimes they work, but if not we can go more deeply into the individual's unique personal narrative.

My ideal client is one who is committed to honesty about what is bringing them to therapy. They are willing to face their fears and push themselves outside of their comfort zone to move their needle closer to wholeness, healing and wellness. They are consistent in attendance and dedicated to doing the work that is required to address and meet their treatment goals.

I am a therapist because I am passionate about accompanying individuals on their self-understanding, exploration, and healing journey. The environment I provide is nonjudgmental, open, and safe. It focuses on an integration of mind, body, and spirit. I believe each individual is unique so I use a variety of approaches to assist my clients, depending on individual needs. I completed my internship and residency in Community Mental Health (IOP), Juvenile Detention Center, Methadone Clinic, Private Practice (PHP), and Residential/Acute. Currently, I provide services in DC and Virginia, but I only provide virtual sessions at this time.

Cancer Therapists

How does cancer affect mental health?

A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.

What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?

The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?

Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counseling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.

How long does cancer therapy typically last?

The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
