I believe that we all have an innate healing power within us, and that developing a safe and caring relationship with a therapist can be a wonderful means toward enlivening this power. By going within, we can discover the agency to overcome any obstacle and can bring into being a renewed sense of hope, purpose, and a life of fulfillment. I come from a holistic, humanistic, and mindfulness/spiritually-oriented tradition who believe that a therapist is only as skilled as they are evolved, or self-actualized themselves. I specialize in trauma, dissociation, & complex post traumatic stress disorder.

As an Asian-American DACAmented bilingual/bicultural therapist, my heart lies in supporting members of the AAPI community and other ethnic minorities who have experienced marginalization due to their intersection of identities (ie. spirituality, sexuality, legal status, cultural backgroud). I work with individuals who have experienced religious and relational trauma, attachment wounds, imposter syndrome, low self-esteem, dysfunctional relationships, and repressed sexuality, as a result of internalized cultural and societal messages they were exposed to that have further perpetuated an oppressive narrative around who they are.

I've been a clinical psychologist for over 40 years. I have treated a broad range of clients during this time utilizing humanistic and psychodynamic approaches. My focus in therapy is with adults who struggle with a variety of personal issues including depression, anxiety, self-esteem and relationships. I am quite interested in the concerns that younger adults confront as well as those that individuals face as they transition into their mid-life years including aging, retirement, sexuality, illness, and loss. I believe that I can help clients gain greater clarity as they work to resolve these issues in an atmosphere of support and warmth.

I wholeheartedly believe that you are your own expert on your life. Through therapy, my goal is to help you identify and work through the challenges and obstacles that may be standing in the way of gratifying relationships, a satisfying work life, and living the life you wish to lead. Your problems are not what define you as a person. I am interested in helping you clearly express your strengths, hopes, and values, which may have become lost amidst life's struggles. I do my best to create a safe and supportive environment with warmth, respect, kindness, curiosity, and a little humor.

Just as we learn spoken language as children, we learn an unspoken language of relationship. Just as the words we hear become the words we speak, the way we're treated becomes the basis for how we treat others, and how we expect to be treated by the people in our lives. We learn to define ourselves according to the terms by which we were defined, but most of us suspect that there's more to the story. There is.

When considering my patients, I take a holistic approach and assess from a bio/psycho/social/spiritual point-of-view. I believe assessing the whole patient is the best way to understand underlying problems/symptoms related to psychopathology. Most importantly, empathy, trust, a therapeutic alliance and rapport is of utmost concern; I want your therapy hour to be useful, beneficial, and enjoyable.

Your everyday choices reflect the meaning you are attempting to bring to your life. Big or small, they are rooted in your in past, hopes, desires, needs, dreams, etc. There are times, however, when you experience trauma, severe life stressors, or times of crisis that impact your ability to make healthy choices producing confusion, fear, anger, and sadness. You may even feel as if it is a struggle to find ease, happiness, and peace. The journey to be more self-aware, to bring more contentment and joy in your life and to connect with others in healthy ways is the destination that you and I will strive towards.

To change or not to change? One of the most frustratingly human experiences in life is wanting to change for the better only to find yourself repeating the same ineffective patterns and mistakes. This is where counseling can come into play. By understanding your own motivations and the internal barriers getting in the way of change, you can develop new strategies to know yourself better and develop tools to handle the challenges and stressors of life. My practice is client-centered, strength-based, motivational, and grounded in cognitive behavioral ideas.

I offer short and long term treatment of distressing psychological symptoms. Common symptoms include attentional difficulties, debilitating anxiety, lack of energy/motivation, overwhelming sadness and anger, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, and psychosomatic symptoms. These symptoms often emerge in response to life transitions, intergenerational family dynamics, identity crisis, difficult or traumatic past events, racial trauma, or the loss of a relationship. An additional focus of my practice centers around issues of racial and ethnic identity, navigating interracial relationships, and immigration related issues.

As a queer, second-generation, Asian-American, I believe that kindness and compassion are my natural orientation and I position myself accordingly as a therapist. I believe that we're all inherently enough no matter what we’ve learned from our childhood, what society has told us we are capable of, or who we think we should be to have self-worth and fulfilling relationships. I believe we're all capable of unlearning and learning, and giving ourselves the grace to do so. My clients typically struggle with depression, anxiety, life transitions, relational conflict, intimacy and trust, childhood and intergenerational trauma, and grief.

I specialize in working with young men's issues such as emotional vulnerability, identity, loneliness, and relationships.
Accepting new clients for 100% virtual (via video) therapy sessions! - Do you have a safe space to talk about how you actually feel? Life can often feel like an emotional rollercoaster, balancing tasks including school/college, work, social life, and other responsibilities. In the middle of this, our mental health can suffer within our family, friends, or relationships. The weight of anxiety, depression, or grief may let itself be known, making it harder to get through daily responsibilities.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
