I have experience working with those grappling with trauma, grief, substance abuse/addiction, anxiety, depression, boundary setting, and I have a huge heart for those currently going through career and life transitions.
This crazy and challenging time we find ourselves in may seem overwhelming and too much at times. Life is not often fair and comes complete with complex issues. I desire to hear your story and come alongside you to develop the skills necessary to overcome adversity in your life. I employ psychological assessments and depending on the situation different clinical interventions in assisting my clients. I have found success with clients through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy along with dialectical behavior therapy, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, internal family systems, and person-centered approaches.

"Serenity comes when you trade expectations for acceptance." "Letting go" is often the best form of acceptance. If you struggle with holding on to grief, depression, anger, anxiety, frustration, etc... I am here to help. Experiences can lead to negative expectations & perceptions of self and life. I work with clients to accept negative experiences without accepting those experiences as their value and/or identity. We work together, in a caring and safe environment, to identify barriers in life and learn and implement skills that improve mental, emotional, and behavioral health, as we begin the process of living a Quality Life.

Over the past 45 years, I've worked with hundreds of clients experiencing depression, anxiety, sexual issues, spiritual concerns, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, parenting issues, PTSD, anger problems, low self esteem, grief, guilt, jealousy and self doubt.
I have been a therapist since 1978. I taught undergraduate and graduate Psychology courses at Ottawa University (11 years) and Rio Salado College (17 years).I specialize in OCD and obsessive sexual behaviors but have treated nearly every type of client and diagnosis over the past four decades. I'm told I'm personable and that people feel comfortable with me immediately. I'm a good nonjudgmental listener and I believe that counseling should be a deep but intriguing investigation - not a painful one.

I maintain a diverse practice serving adult clients (18-80+) presenting with a variety of concerns, including but not restricted to anxiety, depression, grief, trauma/abuse, relationships and family of origin issues.
My first priority is to offer a professional, safe, and comfortable environment to explore whatever concerns you may be having and to develop a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship from which to provide therapy. As a former military psychologist (2001-2006), I had very broad and diverse exposure to many mental health conditions. I quickly learned to implement a variety of approaches to address the unique needs of my clients. My aim is to provide treatment tailored specifically to each client. No two people are exactly alike and their therapy shouldn't be either. Above all, I want to help you create lasting change and improvement.

We can all benefit from the support therapy offers from time to time. Some reasons people come to me are: struggling in their romantic relationship; past experiences continually impact their current life; reliving past failures; feeling disconnected, stressed, anxious, stuck, or unloved; experiencing a loss, and needing someplace safe to connect; feeling out of control in their life; having difficulty reaching goals; or want to feel more joy, connection, and love in their life.

My ideal client wants to grow and heal from the past. However, sometimes the past can hold you down. Anxiety, addiction, deep fear, stress, depression, and other unhealthy behaviors can be signs you may be stuck in the past or in a lot of pain. Many of my clients have often experienced events in their lives such as grief and loss, trauma, unhealthy relationships, divorce, neglect, feeling lost and empty, and/or deep rejection. I work very hard to support my clients by challenging them, validating them, and holding them 100% accountable.

Are you feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or like you are having a difficult time coping with life right now? You are not alone! I understand how challenging it can be to feel stuck and wanting to have more peace in your life. I fully believe the statement by Jon Kabat Zinn who said, “As long as you are breathing there is more right with you than wrong with you.” My goal as a therapist is to draw out the strengths that you already have and help you build new skills in order to face the challenges, transitions, and stresses that you are facing in your life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
