Have you tried traditional talk therapy before but are now looking for something that goes deeper? Maybe life has forced you to slow down due to the
loss
of a loved one or another significant change. Perhaps you’ve just come to realize that despite all this go-go-go, you actually feel like you’re still lacking direction, purpose, and deep connection with yourself and those close to you. You don’t want to have to “rehash” the past or revisit every detail of what you’ve experienced, but you know that life can feel different than it does today. You believe long-term change is possible…you just need some help getting there.

People grieve for lots of things aside from an actual
death
. Sometimes the process of grieving or adapting to change can be overwhelming and exhausting. We are most especially challenged when things happen to us that we do not choose or are out of our control. Sometimes these circumstances lead to high anxiety, depression and coping choices that may hurt us. This is when we lose sight of who we are, where our strength lies, and may have a hard time just trying to live our daily lives. This is when we need some gentle, clear, skillful support and guidance.

It can be overwhelming and even downright disappointing when life isn’t going quite as you expected or planned. You find yourself stuck and maybe lost, wondering how you got here. This life isn’t the life you imagined. Perfectionism, motherhood, low self-esteem, significant
loss
,
death
of a loved one, or other life challenges have thrown you for a loop and left you in a place of great discomfort. This current path is upsetting, and you feel more stressed, frustrated, and tearful than you’d like to be. You know things can be better, and you’re ready to get some help to bring back the peace and happiness you long for.

I believe in the resilience of individuals and know that despite traumatic circumstances,
grief
, depression, anxiety or other obstacles, that people have the strength within to find a healthy path.
Individual therapy, whether with adults or adolescent clients, must truly be individual in my mind - a unique experience that really depends on the nature and reason the person is there to see me. My training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is only one part of my approach due to my varied and eclectic background. I respect and value the research based approach of CBT and its goal to teach clients how to interpret and deal with various aspects of their environment, but my training as an attorney and my role with the FBI also influences my approach to clients.

These life experiences help to inform my work with those experiencing trauma,
loss
, transition and
grief
.
Humans are by nature social animals and yet many of us have lost connection within ourselves and our community. I believe this is due, in part, to a frantic world that has led to relational trauma, a poor sense of self, health challenges, addiction,
loss
and isolation. Feeling relevant, finding meaning, having a mission, knowing joy and learning emotional regulation/tolerance/resiliency are ways in which we can heal ourselves and the world at large. In addition to working with private clients, my group practice provides intensive outpatient programming for clients in crisis who are seeking change in a short period of time.

grief
and
loss
as gracefully as possible.
Life can sometimes move too fast, too slow, or just be a bit too much – it can throw you off-balance as things continue to change around you. You may feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or discouraged when you try so hard to get by but still feel like things are not going the way you wish it would. All of this is even harder when you have burdens from past traumas or aren’t sure where you want to go. The truth is that behind all the struggle, life curveballs and misunderstandings you may experience, there is strength within you that can be uncovered and brought to the forefront.

So here we are. You feel stuck, lost, hopeless, ashamed, alone. You may not know how you got HERE, or how to get THERE, but you know you are READY for change. You may have heard a podcast, read a book, or saw a post that resonated. You may be able to see that some relationships in your life are unhealthy, or that you don’t have the best boundaries. You may be able to see the ways in which your history has impacted your present day. You may have recently experienced a tremendous trauma- maybe a
death
of someone you loved deeply. Whatever it is, you KNOW that you want to experience life differently, but it’s so dang hard to get there.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
