I believe it is imperative that we broaden our definition of "trauma." Trauma can be ANYTHING disruptive (in addition to assault, combat, death , etc.). An unhealthy relationship; a break-up; bullying; neglect; a stressful event or period of time are all traumatic. These disruptive experiences influence what we think about ourselves and our world; and they often guide our decisions and perspectives.

I work with individual adults and couples and am trained in trauma treatment and have taken advanced training in grief counseling.
I believe therapy is an opportunity to be compassionately curious about ourselves – to reflect on our experiences, patterns, losses, traumas, and relationships, and consider how they impact our wellbeing and our sense of self. I want to support you in your process of tending to the pieces of yourself and your story that often feel sticky or unapproachable and offer a space to explore ways to find peace and a sense of grounding. If you’re going through a major loss , experiencing anxiety/depression or noticing patterns in your relationships, I am here to witness your insights and strengthen your connection to self.

Among other issues I treat are those who suffer with chronic pain, grief , and trauma, clients and their caregivers coping with Alzheimer's Disease.
After many years of my own psychotherapy with several different behavioral health practitioners, I am grateful for their reaching out to me with their intelligence, experience and empathy. The majority of my patients seeking psychotherapy complain and often exhibit signs of depression or anxiety, and often both. They often have difficulty throughout the day and night, having trouble concentrating with fatigue and poor short-term memory, with persistent eating issues, and hypersomnia and or insomnia, worsening their condition. My treatment techniques include psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused.

I specialize in working with people struggling with: family of origin issues, depression, issues related to sexuality, grief and loss , mortality, relationships, significant life changes, and health struggles.
I work with people using a variety of philosophies, but those encompassing humanistic and psychodynamic theories inform most of my thoughts related to psychotherapy. This generally means I am most interested in focusing on emotions, insight, relationships, past experiences, meta-emotion, self-worth, and authenticity. I rely heavily on discussing shame, vulnerability, emotional needs, and creating meaning in life. My work is fairly non-directive, and I will be most focused on helping you find your own authentic path by reflecting and exploring deeper meanings and patterns that arise in our discussions.

I specialize in treating clients with anxiety, stress, grief and challenges brought on by trauma.
I am a clinician at the Phoenix Wellness Center located in North Phoenix. I retired after twenty one years as an educator where I served as a teacher and a Principal. When I decided to retire, I thought about what I loved most about my education career, and working with children, parents and teachers was first on the list. I feel I bring a unique perspective when working with clients who are dealing with challenges that at times seem overwhelming. When working with my clients, I draw on my experience to focus on the whole person and to build a relationship based on trust and genuine positive regard.

I specialize in working with hard-working adults who struggle with relationships, trauma, or grief .
Does life look good on paper but not feel that way on the inside? You may not even know exactly how to describe it. Your relationships don't feel as fulfilling as you wish they did, and sometimes you even blame yourself for feeling the way you do. You have a sense that maybe your past experiences influence the way you feel today, and at times you start to lose hope that you can feel fulfilled in yourself and your life. It might be hard to remember a time when things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure - you’re ready for some relief and to regain a sense of confidence in yourself and engage meaningfully in relationships.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
