Helping individuals heal and improve their lives is what drives my work as a therapist. I offer a non-judgmental space and treat the whole individual. Our relationship is the most important foundation that will determine positive outcomes, and I keep that at the forefront of my work. I enjoy working with children, adolescents and adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. I use a team approach to help clients learn new coping skills & healthier ways to problem-solve their issues.

My approach is client-driven and integrative. I start with assessing developmental history, losses and trauma, and behavioral health issues. I then clarify with the client how I can assist them with their identified goals.

I believe that psychotherapy is an active process resulting in clarity and change. It can help identify ineffective patterns of thinking and behavior, which may create stress, emotional problems, stress related medical problems, addiction problems, and/or relationship problems. Sometimes the work can be difficult but can also be profoundly rewarding and life changing. I believe in the power of positive change and would love to help you turn your stress into a life balance.

I believe we all have the ability to live meaningful lives. And that we all have the potential to heal past traumas, develop new strategies for coping, and grow into the people we want to be. As a therapist, I meet you where you are and, without judgment, maintain a deep sense of curiosity about you and where you want to go. Therapy can play a critical role in unearthing patterns and fully exploring the path that led you to this moment. It can also help you map the way forward through understanding, discovery and clarity. I consider it a privilege to help you along this journey.

You may be saying to yourself: "I feel stuck. I feel disengaged. The problems seem insurmountable. When I attempt conversation about difficult issues they invariably turn to gridlock. Hurtful words are used by both of us. Withdrawal, isolation and silence follow. It seems we have a crisis over something. Then we have a brief honeymoon followed by a period of tension leading to another explosion. Seems like it never ends. Seems my efforts to engage are met with distancing by my spouse. I feel more and more disconnected, more helpless and hopeless about this relationship."

I integrate mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment-based therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and trauma focused methods.
Each of us have deep-seeded value and deserve to be connected to our whole selves. Often, past experiences of trauma and suffering not only impact our beliefs, behaviors, and relationships, but disconnect us from ourselves. Discovering ourselves can be difficult, but it is an essential part of healing. Our capacity for growth and change is possible with understanding and compassion.

We all encounter moments in life that can create a ripple effect in the way we view and treat ourselves. These moments may exacerbate symptoms we would normally be able to manage or they may be the catalyst for something we have never experienced. The coping mechanisms we have used to survive in the past do not define us, and with the support of a good team, we can begin to learn new skills to help move us forward. Finding the right person to talk to can be a first step in finding a path to (re)discovering a more regulated and integrated self.

I work with women who carry the weight of their negative childhood experiences into their adult lives. These experiences may have manifested into anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or a general sense of being stuck or frozen. When ignored or not dealt with, these deep impactful experiences from childhood eat away at us, despite "knowing better" as adults on how to deal our symptoms. The women I work with are looking to find healing from their pasts, to find their voice, and re-discover who they are and where they want to go in life. I hope to support you in this, too.

Children often struggle with emotions; identifying, expressing and processing their feelings can be very difficult. Anger can rear its ugly head when underneath it may really be a whole bunch of other emotions going on. Some children need to express themselves other than verbally. Play and art therapy techniques, sand tray, and therapeutic games can be used as ways for kids to process emotions without talking or feeling pressured. Children often just need to be heard, given skills, and provided with opportunity for little successes that can increase their self-esteem. Parents are invited to learn valuable tools as well.

This journey through life can be difficult and we are all doing it for the first time. Changes in relationships, job, and living situation are enough to warrant large amounts of stress. Compound this with other traumatic events and things can become difficult to handle. As a therapist I can offer a unique stance as a person who is a neutral party in your life with no preconceived notions of you. This gives you the opportunity not only to meet with a trained professional but to have an unbiased and empathetic listener. Let's work together to build on skills and identify what it is you want out of therapy.

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
