Sometimes unexpected things or events happen to us that can make our happiness feel out of our grasp. Things like life & family transitions, chronic physical or mental illness, autoimmune disorders, romantic and familial relationships, trauma, abuse, cyber/social media related anxiety, disabilities or depression can lead you to feeling extremely overwhelmed and as if your life is out of control. This may cause you to feel trapped, alone, unsafe, or stuck in a dark chapter of your life that sometimes feels unbearable or unending. I am here to help you turn the page and progress to a new chapter of your story without judgment.

Making the choice to start therapy can be overwhelming and anxiety-inducing.
Do you feel like you are in the same relationships all the time no matter who you are with? Perhaps experiencing attachment to unhealthy patterns and/or people? Maybe you had an unpleasant medical experience and now fear care. Perhaps you look in the mirror and don't feel your best. Maybe you have difficulty saying "no" and lean towards "people-pleasing" tendencies. Because people would be mad at you, right? Do you have difficulty with boundaries? Maybe some FOMO or isolating in your sweats watching Netflix but you want more social interactions? If you answered yes to any or all of these, you are in the right place!

Do you ever feel like it's your own brain that's making life so much harder? Parts of you want to practice self love and grace while other parts of you are self critical and shaming. Maybe you're experiencing unwanted thoughts or traumatic memories that scare you and make you feel out of control. Sometimes our own minds feel unsafe and full of conflict and pain. It is so hard to cope with the challenges of life while managing loud and distressing thoughts and emotions. We feel isolated, anxious, hopeless and ashamed. I want to tell you that you are not alone, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Fatou Alabi is a Resident in Social Worker working toward her licensure. Fatou became a social worker and mental health therapist in order to connect with like-minded individuals who struggle with daily activities, trying to improve their self-esteem while simultaneously balancing their culture and faith. As a West African and Muslim woman, she has experience with navigating and understanding what mental health means within one’s culture and faith. Diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and PTSD have been at the forefront within her community, yet seeking therapy has always been taboo.

I’m so glad you’re here. Making the decision to reach out for help takes tremendous courage and vulnerability. Great job on taking this first step. Maybe you're here because you're struggling with recurring anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges. Or maybe you've tried therapy before and it helped briefly, but you found yourself repeating the same patterns shortly after. If you're ready to do the deep work to uncover and heal the root cause of your distress so that you see lasting change in your life, I'd be honored to support you on this journey.

I work with clients who are grappling with anxiety, depression, and stress. Many are dealing with changes in their family, including substance use, codependency, and relationship issues. My clients are diverse but they all want to feel understood and validated. The most important part of therapy is the rapport between the clinician and the client, known as unconditional positive regard. The client needs to feel supported so they can discuss the presenting problem. Throughout this process, I strive to be warm, empathetic, and knowledgeable. Previous clients have described me as approachable, patient, and open minded.

You aren’t quite sure when life became so overwhelming, but the memories of past events, the feelings of a racing heart, and the constant panic are leaving you feeling hopeless and desperate for a solution. Each person’s journey is filled with experiences and often challenges that shape their narratives of themselves and the world. Because of this each person’s definition of healing and fulfillment is different, and I believe that each of us holds our own unique resolutions and keys to finding peace. I have worked with many overcoming trauma, depression, grief, anxiety, transitions, self-esteem issues, difficulty with boundaries and interpersonal conflict. Through a nurturing supportive environment I build off a person's strengths, gifts, and relationships and create a safe space for individuals' to access their inner ability to heal.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
