How would it feel to be free from
anxiety
that keeps thoughts running through your mind all day long? How would your life change if you didn't have to experience depression? The sadness that keeps you unmotivated which leads to you beating yourself up? I imagine when you're at work or at home you may look like you're doing fine to everyone else, but inside you feel overwhelmed and consumed with negativity. I wonder if your feelings may even have your self esteem in a rough place leaving you feeling hopeless. Honestly, the best thing about this is that
anxiety
and depression can be put behind you with some effort and new techniques.

For many people, the idea of reaching out for help is daunting. Whether dealing with stress,
anxiety
, depression, loss, trauma, relationship issues, or life and work effectiveness, it takes courage and trust to share personal thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with another person, especially a stranger. My clients have given me feedback that my style--informal, real, honest, non-judgmental and often good-humored--helps to diffuse the
anxiety
they feel when entering counseling. I mix this personal style with all I've learned in 30 years of experience as a therapist, supervisor, and consultant.

Often, we experience a great deal of frustration as we move from the person that we are to the person that we are created to be. It can be difficult to balance past pain, present problems and future
fears
. We can feel so “stuck” with no idea of how to continue forward. This looks differently for everyone -- from adjusting to a new environment to dealing with past hurts to uncovering your full identity in a world that constantly demands change. But, if you are WILLING, then I am here to help!

I describe myself as a "general practitioner" and therefore most often see clients struggling with depression and/or
anxiety
.
Most challenges we face as humans are "normal" as opposed to there being something "wrong" with us. However, we can often feel alone and overwhelmed when facing problems. Talking to a caring person can make a difference. I believe it helps to have an objective, knowledgeable and wise coach to help you find your way. I like to use analogies and work as a team with a client.

I have a wide range of experience and specialize in treating individuals with depression and
anxiety
in addition to those with substance abuse or addiction histories.
I believe that anyone and everyone can benefit from seeing a therapist. Everyone deals with change, stress, and the general ebb and flow of life and having a trusted therapist to turn to during these times can make it all feel more manageable. Starting therapy can be an intimidating and overwhelming process. My goal is to provide a safe, empathetic, non-judgmental space for you to discuss your feelings, behaviors, and thoughts. I get it, being vulnerable can be uncomfortable. However, learning to not only accept the uncomfortable, but to use it to make real, lasting change is why I’m here.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
