The teenage years can be really tough on teens AND their parents. Changes happen that can throw their emotions on a rollercoaster -- sadness, worry or anger can take over. Friends can push a teen toward dangerous choices. Add on the stress of high school, early romantic relationships, working towards independence, and there are all sorts of places that a teenager can struggle. It takes a special sort of counselor to work with a teen. Someone who is serious and kind when they struggle, but keeps a sense of humor, wonder and joy that can connect with them past those struggles.

I work with individuals and couples struggling with life changes, depression, anxiety, and marital conflicts.
I have been studying and working in mental health for 24 years since 1999. Emotional suffering due to relational conflict, anxiety and depression are some of the main reasons people seek therapy. When people engage fully in the therapeutic process, they can often experience moments of transformation that can be profound and or subtle in which their experience of suffering is either alleviated or their attitude towards their situation shifts in meaningful ways. My training and experiences as a clinical psychologist can help you to reduce your pain and how you relate to the difficult experiences or people in your life.

I specialize in working with adults who are suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma/PTSD, grief, relationship issues, adjustment issues, low self-esteem, eating disorders, and emotional and behavioral issues associated with traumatic brain injury.
As we walk through our lives, we are faced with many challenges. Sudden, unexpected events such as injuries, illnesses, and losses can happen to us at any given time. In this fast changing world, it is often difficult to have a sense of balance. You may be overwhelmed by restless, negative feelings and thoughts from past or present issues. It takes courage to seek counseling, face your issues, and to take steps towards positive changes. I believe we all have inner abilities to heal and grow. As a therapist, I would be honored to assist you in your individual journey and help you to discover your true potential and life value.

I have been practicing psychotherapy for over 28 years. My experience allows me to work in deeper ways that help my clients to make meaningful and often dramatic changes in the way that they feel about themselves. These internal changes often lead to exciting and fulfilling external changes (i.e. relationships, increased meaningfulness in one's life, aliveness). When clients have feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, overwhelm, or lack of connection - I work with them in ways that help them to uncover and heal the parts of themselves that may have them stuck. My clients often report that our work is unlike previous therapy.

And, if we don’t have the right person for the job, DON'T WORRY, I'm never shy about referring clients to my trusted friends and colleagues around town!.
If you want counseling to be a SUCCESS, then the most important thing is your FIRST step – getting connected with the “right” therapist, not just any therapist! And that’s where I come in; as the owner and clinical director of Lotus Counseling, I will use my 15+ years of licensed clinical experience to help you find a clinician who is a strong fit for you and your specific presenting concerns. We will use a 45-60 minute (free!) phone consultation to talk about all the relevant details of your life and presenting concerns to make absolutely sure that by the time you are matched with a therapist, it’s the RIGHT therapist!

At Sub Rosa Therapy we specialize in somatic and integration therapy approaches like Somatic Experiencing (SE), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ketamine-Assisted Therapy (KAT), and mindfulness-based approaches in general. These approaches are especially effective with mood disorders like anxiety and depression, and stress disorders like adjustment disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). SE and KAT approaches can allow previously unconscious content to surface and to be safely and effectively processed leading to long-term benefits as well as the easing of symptoms.

I have experience with adults who have co-occurring disorders, including drug and alcohol addictions, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder.
I am interested in learning about each individual I see because my personal aim is to aid clients in reaching their full potential. I believe this can be achieved with a mutual and holistic understanding of each client, specifically within one's social world and through the lens of one's past. For me, counseling is a collaborative process, and I have respect for each individual's autonomy throughout the process. To find meaning, even in the middle of suffering, to heal past or current events, and to develop coping skills can all lead to a deeper understanding of oneself, which is a never ending process.

Therapy can give you the tools needed to orient your life around your values, needs, and loves, rather than your fears, resentments, and past experiences.
As a psychologist, I offer psychotherapy to individuals experiencing a range of issues impacting their well-being, relationships, and functioning. I believe therapy ultimately involves a collaborative relationship between the therapist and client, which can provide healing, insight, and desired change. I endeavor to help my clients understand and work through 1) what has contributed to their distress, 2) what patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating (consciously or unconsciously) are maintaining their distress, 3) what barriers to change may be present, and 4) possible steps to take to bring change and relief.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
