Meditation strategies are a powerful tool to manage anxiety.
I treat clients with a "team" approach. Together, we help you to feel happier, reduce your suffering, understand patterns that get you "stuck" in life and help with making life feel more balanced. I believe that with mindfulness, learning how to be more kind to yourself, and being open to new perspectives, you have the power to change anything within you in your present day life, including unwholesome habits and increasing self esteem. I have formal training and personal experience in mindfulness meditation and other grounding tools to help with reducing anxiety and stress and increasing joy and contentment in your life.

Hi My name is Maggie Blackburn and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who helps people with social and relationship anxiety, to learn how to be confident and explore social and romantic relationships.
You have noticed for a while that when you are around other people you take things personally, you don’t feel confident, you second guess yourself or find yourself replaying different situations you’ve been in over and over again. You aren’t “anti-social”, in fact you really want to BE social, but every time an opportunity comes up for you to do something you either need someone else to go with you or you talk yourself out of going. It has been a long time since you have been on a date or had what felt like a healthy relationship. You are starting to think that you will never find someone.

I have experience helping clients to navigate difficult life transitions, process traumatic memories, manage anxiety symptoms, and build a stronger relationship with themselves.
Currently taking individual and group therapy clients! Do you ever feel like you take care of everyone around you and can't find the time or energy to care for yourself? Do you experience imposter syndrome or anxiety and sometimes don't even know where it is coming from? Is there a part of you that tends to be self-critical and you don't know how to manage it? When we experience distressing events in our lives, they can create negative beliefs about ourselves that can impact the way we navigate our world. Your pain is real, you are not alone, and you are capable of healing. Let's get you started on that path.

I work with individuals and couples, often working with developmental transition, interpersonal conflict and relationships, depression, anxiety, family and systems issues.
I enjoy the diversity of my clients, walking with adults of all ages and backgrounds. In 2011 I turned into the joys of psychotherapy as a second career. I see my main job as listening carefully, mirroring your process with empathy and helping you move toward the goals you set, whether they are about reaching deeper inside or moving into the practical steps you need to take next week. My experience and spirituality are assets you can rely on, but they will not direct your own process of understanding, healing and maturation.

I support people dealing with depression, anxiety, relational distress, life transitions, gender and sexuality exploration, chronic illness, autism and/or ADHD. Healthy relationships with our family, friends, and support systems including therapy inform our ability to cope, process, and grow. I believe healing happens when we develop self-compassion for our most shamed parts and build support systems that meet us with care and understanding. My style is integrative, mindful and rooted in social justice.

I specialize in working with people who have anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and transgender folks.
I believe that everyone deserves a time and a place to work on their mental health, heal from painful experiences, and move towards finding more meaning in their lives and relationships. I also know that given the current pandemic, we're all struggling more than usual! I offer a warm and judgment-free zone to work on a range of issues. I believe psychotherapy works best when it is tailored to each person as a unique individual. I utilize an integrative model, drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), relational, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and humanistic approaches.

I often use a technique called Heart Assisted Therapy, which treats conditions such as panic, PTSD, and phobias.
I believe it is the relationship in therapy that is truly healing. Honesty, compassion and sometimes a sense of humor can be powerful medicine. I enjoy working with people who are truly ready to make some changes in their life, even if they're terrified to do so.

It can be challenging to reach out if you've had difficult experiences in therapy before or if anxiety or attachment concerns are what bring you to seek support.
You absolutely can heal, and finding the right therapist usually starts with a feeling: an intuitive sense that this person may be able to help. Competence in your specific areas of concern helps, too: people with anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, personality disorder diagnoses, and complex dissociative conditions, including DID, will find expert, affirming care. Individuals and families in crisis welcome. I enjoy working with older adults and young folks in equal measure. Opening a space where you can speak freely about even the most difficult or scary places will help you heal, and I won’t try to judge or abandon you.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
