For almost 20 years I have been helping individuals and families find healing on their journey. I am an associate licensed counselor (ALC) under the supervision of Dr. James Jackson, LPC. I am also pursuing my Registered Play Therapist credential. I earned my M.Ed. in counseling from The University of Montevallo. I enjoy working with clients of all ages. My goal as a counselor is to align myself as a companion to you in whatever circumstance you are needing support. Some of the challenges my clients have struggled with are anxiety, depression, loneliness, and grief.

We will begin with your current symptoms, dysfunctions, or just plain unhappiness. 98% of the time we are the walking wounded trying to function as if we are "fine" and nothing is "bothering me". This state of constant repression of our emotions will cause anxiety, depression, physical illness, phobias, and eventually an event will happen that leads to emotional crisis....the proverbial last straw.

There is so much beauty in being honest and vulnerable. As a therapist, it is a privilege to be able to create a safe space for my clients—a space that gives them an opportunity to build strength, awareness, and resilience. I am also an Associate Partner Trauma Therapist through IITAP which enables me to help betrayed partners navigating betrayal trauma.

I also work with persons experiencing depression, anxiety, men's issues, grief/loss, alcohol abuse, codependency, self harm and mood disorders. I have a background as a first responder and work with law enforcement, health care, fire/EMS, and military personnel.

I work primarily with children & adolescents of all ages & their families but also have experience working with individuals & couples from diverse backgrounds & alternative lifestyles. I have worked with clients through various aspects of their life including anxiety, depression, trauma, coping with special needs, social skills, behavioral or relationship issues & life or familial transitions such as divorce, adoption & blended families.

Greetings, I'm Courtney McKinnon, & I'm more than just a therapist - I'm your partner on the journey to healing & growth. Under the supervision of Sarah Cabler LPC-S. My therapeutic philosophy revolves around empowerment, resilience, & compassion. Holding a bachelors degree from the U of Alabama and a masters degree from the University of North Alabama I have gained a strong foundation in psychology & Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

I have 24 years experience in the mental health profession. I also am very passionate about my work with children and families with issues related to adoption & attachment trauma/wounds.

I have years of experience in a variety of mental health rolls. I have worked on each end of the spectrum- inpatient to private practice. The majority of my clients are equally male and female from teenagers, young adults, and mothers.
