I also love working with college students, and specialize in concerns surrounding identity development. I work with clients ages 24-50 and have experience with depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, childhood abuse, trauma, life transitions, lack of confidence, perfectionism or stress-management. I am currently welcoming new clients, both individuals and couples. Going to a counselor or therapist when you are feeling sad, anxious, overwhelmed, depressed, or simply out of sorts should be as normal as going to the doctor when you have the flu. I see myself partnering with you in a therapeutic relationship as guide and counselor, providing empathy and compassion as we explore issues and concerns, together, along the way. My approach is holistic, based upon the impact of the mind-body connection on well-being. My work background includes ten years as a teacher and twelve years as a hospice medical social worker.

My name is Dawn Sutro and I have been working with families in Oregon for 17 years. I am trained as a Marriage and Family Therapist and I have worked with people at many ages and stages of their lives. I have a particularly extensive background working with couples, families, and children. I also have 14 years experience working with military families and veterans. I have worked with children and their families in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I utilize various therapy techniques, such as CBT, DBT, and Family Systems.

As a systems oriented psychotherapist, I believe that we are connected to and affected by those around us. Our families of origin, communities,cultures,workplaces and families of choice impact our lives and sense of self. Relationships and experiences we have had in the past influence who we are and how we relate to the world. To live with the greatest joy and productivity we must heal past relational traumas and bring to consciousness effects they have had in our lives. By doing so, we are free to make thoughtful choices about how we live our lives and relate to others.

People seek me out for counseling for many reasons, including: Identifying ways to experience more enjoyment and security in life, the challenges of life's transitions, relationship struggles, addressing addictions and other unhealthy lifestyles, depression and anxiety.

My approach to individual and family counseling is rooted in a compilation of family of origin, family systems, cognitive behavioral, collaborative problem solving, solution focused and narrative theories. He earned a bachelor's degree from Graceland College in 1998, studying Sociology and Psychology and a Master of Social Work degree from Portland State University in 2006 studying Counseling. Eric is a member of the National Association of Social Workers. He has extensive training and experience in providing child and family therapy.

Over the years I see that I am very well-suited to work with clients who are experiencing a major life transition. These include changes in relationship status, employment, health, sexual/ gender identity, as well as retirement/aging concerns. While transitions can bring new opportunities, such changes also come with an array of losses, endings and goodbyes. Transitions can generate challenging symptoms, including a sense of grieving, starting over and/or confronting the unknown. Life can lead one to a place where it pushes you to explore your personality and life choices, and make new sense of your life experiences.

Most of us have difficulties being able to live the life we would like to live. Sometimes it can be hard to see what within us is getting in the way of achieving our goals. We do not exist in a vacuum, other people play a part in why we are who we are, and it takes people to help us create lasting change. My focus is to meet you where you are and help you grow right there, to clear away what is confusing and stifling, and to help you be wholly yourself. I also specialize in ADHD skills building and Career Counseling.

I am not accepting new couples at this time. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, it is my desire to help clients experiencing anxiety or depression, learn ways to not only cope, but overcome. I enjoy assisting clients learn healthier communication and conflict resolution skills, and concurrently learn how to cope with life stressors better. I strive to help my clients gain a better understanding of themselves, and their problematic and possibly self destructive patterns. Sometimes just a new perspective on an old problem can help propel us toward making healthy changes in our lives.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specialized in working with Teenage Girls and Women. Being a Social Worker means that I believe that people are best understood in relation to their environment and that all people are capable of change. I place high value on providing professional, ethical and informed counseling practices.

Many people who are new to therapy understandably want to know what to expect before their first session. In brief, you talk and I listen, that’s the foundation. We'll get to know each other and we'll decide if we work well together. I'll ask questions. I’ll tell you what I hear and offer feedback. We’ll collaborate. You’ll correct me when I’m off and we’ll work to get to the bottom of things. Notably, I’ll direct your attention toward the different ways you feel, moment-to-moment, because these feelings help reveal who we are and what we need.
