Many people who are new to therapy understandably want to know what to expect before their first session. In brief, you talk and I listen, that’s the foundation. We'll get to know each other and we'll decide if we work well together. I'll ask questions. I’ll tell you what I hear and offer feedback. We’ll collaborate. You’ll correct me when I’m off and we’ll work to get to the bottom of things. Notably, I’ll direct your attention toward the different ways you feel, moment-to-moment, because these feelings help reveal who we are and what we need.
We’ll discuss what’s been troubling you. Sometimes the ways we've learned to think make us miserable. Sometimes the way we relate to others is what does it. Other times we don’t know why we feel the way we do. It’s okay not to know, because not knowing is necessary for growth.
We feel like we need to be so many things. Strong, independent, successful, hardworking, never mad, never wrong, always in control. My goal is to help you let go of the things you thought you needed to be yesterday, so you can embrace the person you are today, while growing toward the person you’ll be tomorrow.
