This is an online group to help new and not-so-new moms with parenthood struggles. The group provides a safe space to connect with other moms while making art. Don't worry--you don't have to be Van Gogh to do art therapy. In fact, you don't need to have any artistic skills at all. Art therapy is all about organizing your inner experience through creative expression, whatever the result looks like. Each group includes a meditation, art prompt based on the topic of the day (with a menu of 2-3 variations), and processing discussion.

If you are struggling with mood, anxiety, motivation, energy, sleep, adjusting to a new baby, relationship turbulence, or difficulties at work or school, I may be able to help. I work with a lot of college students, parents, and corporate workers to help bring out our strengths and guide you towards greater alignment within yourself. I have a specialty interest and intensive training experience in prenatal and postpartum mental health. So if you're a new parent, I'd be happy to help you navigate the beginning of parenthood. As a yoga student and teacher, I'm a big fan of using yoga practices to assist with healing.

Are you and your partner in a rut when it comes to sex? Or maybe it is not happening at all? I specialize in working with committed couples who have lost their sexy spark and are looking to feel closer, more excited and genuinely passionate again. My work is unique in that it's not about tips and tricks, but rather the deeper psychological blockages that might be holding you back in the bedroom. If you're ready to do the work and transform your relationship, I would be honored to be your guide. I love working with sexually diverse clients including: kinksters, LGBTQIA+ clients, sex workers and non-monogamous folks.

This is a process oriented group. The two most common issues that get in the way of connection with others are communication and defensiveness. One of the biggest obstacles people have in relationships is the ability to communicate their feelings and reactions that relate to any of their issues. People also often have difficulty giving feedback to others. This is because we feel we must justify our behavior. It is very hard to just listen to others, and then decide whether or not to incorporate their requests or feedback about our behavior. Group is a direct way to focus interpersonally.

Looking for a psychologist is difficult. It is important to find someone who is a close match with your needs. I approach therapy with an active style, providing direct feedback in a supportive manner. For more than thirty years, I have been successfully helping individuals and couples through Emotionally Focused Therapy, find greater enjoyment in life. For therapy to work, I believe that the therapist needs to care about, and feel connected to, the individuals he or she works with. Psychotherapy is not just a job; helping people get better and live their life in a fuller happier way is something I strive for.

Most parents will sign up for the therapy if they fear their child has behavioral issues, as a way to learn how to work with them, and how to communicate with them in a way the child can respond to. This group is designed to target the specific needs of the 'sandwich generation’: those who are simultaneously nurturing the growth of children and attending to physical or mental decline in their parents. Caregivers are often pulled by competing forces that leave them little time for self-care, reflection and nurturing support. If this description resonates for you, consider carving out special time just for yourself on Friday afternoons to be part of this group. This will be held online or via Zoom to accommodate caregiver schedules.

In many ways good psychotherapy is like a successful remodel, frequently resulting in a stronger and more spacious sense of one's self, lovely new rooms, remarkable views and better access to the world outside (and in). The journey of self-discovery takes courage, but increasing one's awareness of old limitations and obstacles, and developing the ability to gently and carefully dismantle and rebuild where necessary is incredibly rewarding -- often beyond what we can imagine. I believe that it's a collaborative journey on which we embark, moving together towards creating a more fulfilling and rewarding life for you.

Do I look good today? Will I meet my deadline? Will I be laid-off? What will my parents think about that? Should I date this person? Do I want to get married? If you can relate to these questions…then there is a high likelihood that you are over-thinking and you are exhausted. Overthinking is a by-product of stress. The best of us overthink. Through this group, we want to normalize overthinking, rather than pathologize it. Come find out what you can do to manage over-thinking.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in Los Altos?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, zip code, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counseling is typically less expensive than individual counseling, with each session costing on average between $60 to $75. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from $100 to $200 and up, even after insurance. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

As with individual therapy, many insurance companies do offer coverage for group therapy sessions. However, the coverage varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider. Individuals are encouraged to check with their insurance providers to verify coverage.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
