Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss of any kind. Whether it's the death of a loved one, a divorce, career change, a move, change in health, loss of freedom, or any of the 40+ losses a person may experience during their life time; I will walk this journey with you! Also, with 35 years as Substance Abuse Treatment Professional and an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist, an additional aspect of my work is centered in the correlation between addiction, grief and relapse.

Award winning transformation focused therapist Licensed in Virginia and D.C. Losing a loved one can be the most difficult time in your life. Emotions are often surprising in their strength or mildness. Grief often breaks a person completely from the inside out. Grieving is hard work, you can get worn out, and feel battered. It can take a lot longer to work through grief than most people realize. People around you may think it’s helpful for you to not talk or cry or focus on your loss but actually, this is just what people need to do. The goal is to not stay stuck, to move through it—and this is part of the process.

The holidays can be a difficult time for those who are spending the season without their loved one. Whether the loss is recent or in years prior, the stress of the holiday season can present unforeseen challenges. As prey animals, horses are uniquely attuned to not only their surrounding but the minute energetic vibrations we emit, non-verbal cues, body language, and the unspoken feelings that may be keeping us from fully processing our grief. Horses meets us where we are, unconditionally, providing a space to explore our grief and mourn without fear of judgement.

I work from a trauma-informed and attachment-focused approach with clients experiencing grief and loss, relationship issues, trauma, anxiety, and depression.
We can all find ourselves overwhelmed by the expectations put on us by others and ourselves. Often our past experiences may have us repeating patterns and cycles in our relationships that don’t serve us and it can be easy to try to ignore our problems or stuff our feelings only to find they're coming out sideways. To cope, we may engage in behaviors that prevent us from being the best version of ourselves. Often difficult life transitions put us in a state of upheaval, leaving us feeling hopeless, anxious, or depressed. I'd like to help you navigate these challenges.

Everyone experiences loss. Seldom do we allow ourselves to fully experience loss or it's impact. When someone dies, we change jobs, or even have a child, there is loss. When we choose to address these losses, past or present, we can begin to heal, and with healing comes unlimited possibility. I work with families/individuals/children and the impact family dynamics have on their lives; adoptees and their families as they deal their losses; bereaved individuals and groups after the death of a loved one; transitional loss and role adjustment included "empty nest"; corporate downsizing; career counseling; and relationship issues.

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
