I see counselling as a collaborative process and the relationship between client and counsellor is central to meaningful therapeutic work. By creating and nurturing a companionate environment built on acceptance, openness, and genuine connection, you can begin to uncover your own capacity to heal, grow and thrive. At the core of my work are empathy and respect. I am committed to offering a safe, accepting space where you can be yourself without fear of judgement. You already have the strength within you to face your challenges, and you don’t have to be alone to face them.

We all experience challenging times in our life when we struggle to cope. Many individuals I meet seek support because their usual strategies for coping are no longer effective. This can result in you experiencing anxiety or feelings of isolation, sadness, despair or anger. These feelings could be linked to recent life events or childhood experiences and may be impacting detrimentally on your relationships and the way you communicate with others. I offer an opportunity for you to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviour in a non-judgemental, accepting and safe space.

Choosing a therapist can be daunting, especially when you may be anxious, at a low ebb & if you’ve had no experience of working with one before. My approach is to provide a warm, safe & confidential space for reflection; allowing you to explore your difficulties without judgement. This is an opportunity for you to explore yourself, what troubles you & how this may have been shaped by your past or current circumstances. Many of the things that keep us stuck are out of our awareness and so the aim will be to find a safe, measured way to explore this. The aim of therapy as Jung says: ‘Is not to fix our problems but to outgrow them'.

We all have periods in our lives when we are stuck, struggling, in need of support. It can be hard to know where to start to find the support we need. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, the impact of past trauma on your current well-being and relationships. Talking to a therapist can help to make sense of the issues you are dealing with, to process past traumas and find a positive way forward. I am a person-centred and am also trained in EMDR therapy which helps in processing past experiences that are impacting your mental health and well-being.

Counselling can help you make sense of things that are troubling you, support you to recognise your feelings and how they affect you, or simply be a place to process and reflect on difficult emotions, events, or decisions. Even if you have supportive friends and family, talking things through with someone who is there solely to hear you, support you and offer empathy can give you a new perspective and a different understanding of what you are feeling and why.

“We often find that the harder we try to get rid of emotions and thoughts, the stronger they become.” Hi, I’m Lauren. As an experienced counsellor, I consider it a great privilege to walk alongside my clients on their therapeutic journey where every client is unique and there is a new opportunity for learning and growth. When you say "a part of me feels this…. But another part of me feels that…” you have already embraced the idea of Internal Family Systems Therapy, which as an integrative psychotherapist I use amongst other therapeutic modalities such as CBT, Person Centred Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy, to support you.

To change an unhelpful pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving, it is often not enough to learn techniques for modifying our behaviour. To achieve lasting change, we need to understand why we internalised certain patterns that may repeatedly lead us into difficult situations - both with our environment, with people we love and, not least, with ourselves. Gaining this understanding requires us to examine our early relationships with significant others and the way we were brought up and learned to react and regulate ourselves.

You are facing a challenge or have feelings that are difficult to cope with. You want support in working towards being less anxious or overwhelmed. You want a chance to talk about what has been creating difficulty for you or perhaps try and understand what is causing you distress. You are feeling stuck.

I have extensive training including a Master's in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. My own experiences relating to family dynamics, a career in the mental health sector, motherhood, relationships and loss are reflected and undoubtedly beneficial in the way I work. Professionally, I have a breadth of counselling experience working with adolescents and adults who have sought therapy while grappling with a range of challenges impacting their lives including those grappling with fame and fortune. I have also worked extensively with family carers who can, for example, feel isolated, depressed, stressed, anxious, resentful or angry.

It can be really hard asking for help. It can be even harder to think about your own needs when you’re so used to caring for others. What if we’re seen as a failure for not being able to do it all on our own? It can make us feel stuck, trapped even, behind our own smiles and silence. But I see you and I hear you. Life doesn’t have to feel this way. A lot of my clients find it hard taking up space, who have built their lives on prioritising the needs and feelings of others, leading them struggling to identify let alone ask for what they want.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
