I work with a range of issues and have particular experience in bereavement, depression, and relationship problems.
In a world where people seem more connected to their phones than each other, it's rare to find someone who has dedicated time and space just for you. Someone willing to walk alongside you for as long as you need to figure things out, digest what has happened, and help you learn about yourself in the process. Perhaps you’ve reached a crisis point in your life, and don’t know where else to turn? Maybe you’ve been out-of-sorts for a while, and need some help to figure out what is going on? Or perhaps you're here because you want to understand yourself better and how you relate to others?

If you are struggling with anxiety or depression, low self esteem, bereavement or other issues in life, within relationships or at work I can help you to process and explore your thoughts and feelings.
My name is Jo and I am a BACP accredited therapist and supervisor with over 11 years experience in practice. Using a blend of Person Centred and Solution Focused therapy I can offer short term solution focused therapy (6-8 sessions) and longer term if there are perhaps multiple issues to address. I came into counselling following a difficult period in my own life and felt that I wanted to give something back by helping others who may find themselves struggling in life.

Are you feeling low, empty, worried or sad, and searching for confidential support? You may be struggling within your relationships, finding it challenging to manage a new situation, or grieving the loss of an important person in your life. You may be feeling confused and alone in your problems; unable to share with others some of the thoughts and feelings that you’re having, due to feeling that you may be criticised, ridiculed or misunderstood. Taking some time out to explore your thoughts and feelings relating to your past or present, and to develop strategies for moving your life forward could be of long-term benefit to you.

Life can be rough. It can even feel intolerable at times. We may feel unable to see a way through. There are infinite reasons of what may bring you to therapy; relationship issues, loss, grief, addiction.. We cannot change the past, but we can move towards a more fulfilling life. Therapy helps you greater understand yourself: making what previously felt fractured, feel more secure. Therapy is a collaborative process. I will work with you, offering support, challenge, empathy, compassion and space to explore your own experience, which is so rarely possible in our daily lives. I will also guide you to any well being practices.

Hello, my name is Victoria. It can be difficult to take the first brave step towards seeking counselling, especially when confronted with frightening and overwhelming feelings from the past or present. Do you feel as if no one sees or hears you, or are you overwhelmed by experiences and emotions you don't understand? Is the critical inner voice overly loud at times? This may be a difficult place to be, especially if you feel alone. You do not have to feel isolated and lost; it is more comfortable to be beside someone when things are challenging.

I will invite you to explore your feelings and to try out new experiences within our relationship. We will be creatively curious.

Sometimes it feels like everyone says that men have it easy. If that’s so, then why are three quarters of all suicides men? We've been taught to tough it out and to go it alone, and that it’s weak to ask for help when things get on top of us – even if there is someone we can turn to. I work with the issues around the difficulty of being male in a society that creates unrealistic and often contradictory ideals of masculinity that are impossible to live up to, and stops men connecting meaningfully with themselves and others.

Many of my clients have previously seen a lot of mental health professionals and are still struggling to cope with their ongoing psychologically symptoms. They have never dared hope that a “normal” life is possible without having to be constrained by the constant chatter in their head. They have put up with many toxic relationships work issues and family issues all in the belief that this is as good as it gets for them. To be able to be in control and manage their psychological symptoms in all situations is the goal of most of my patients which enables them to lead their best life.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
