Accredited, experienced, integrative and EMDR therapist with several years of working with a variety of issues including addiction, abuse, trauma, anxiety, and identity. You might want to focus on behaviour change, or exploration of the past and old stuck beliefs to try to make sense of what is happening in your life now. Sometimes, people just need a space to talk, and to be heard. EMDR is a powerful and well-evidenced way to work with past trauma, finally freeing ourselves from what is no longer helpful. This can be done alongside time spent reflecting on the past or on current troubling situations and behaviours.

My name is Jo and I am a BACP accredited therapist and supervisor with over 11 years experience in practice. Using a blend of Person Centred and Solution Focused therapy I can offer short term solution focused therapy (6-8 sessions) and longer term if there are perhaps multiple issues to address. I came into counselling following a difficult period in my own life and felt that I wanted to give something back by helping others who may find themselves struggling in life.

Life can sometimes feel unmanageable, we can feel low and isolated and unsure of who to turn to. When we feel stuck in certain situations and these begin impacting on our mood and our behaviour, we can often need the support of an outside source to help us look at our situation more clearly and to help us regain control. This is where an experienced counsellor can really help. "My therapist has been a great help, a good listener, and has given me an insight into who I really am....I'm sure I will be better for her sound counselling."

Do you have difficulties in relationships? Have you noticed the same patterns of behaviour happening repetitively in your life? Do you have low self-confidence/self-esteem? Do you suffer with anxiety and/or depression? If you have answered yes to any of the above, then I may be able to help you.

To put it simply, I find that people tend to want therapy for two main reasons - to make a change and to feel heard. If that's what you're looking for - to feel really heard and understood, to make a change in your life, be it a physical change or a mental one, I would be honoured to be your therapist.

You're holding everything together — work, relationships, responsibilities — and doing it well enough that nobody would guess the effort it actually takes. But privately something won't shift. The anxiety that appears for no obvious reason. The relationships that follow the same exhausting patterns. The flatness that success hasn't touched. You've probably tried to address it. Got some tools, felt better for a while. But something underneath keeps reasserting itself — and you're right that it does. I've spent 30 years helping people understand what's actually driving their experience, not just manage the symptoms.

LGBTQ+ affirmative, trauma-informed therapy for people who have always felt different in some way. The world can be a hard place if you feel a lot. You might have been told you’re too sensitive or too much. There’s space for you to put down who you've been told you 'should' be and come as you are. You might be struggling with anxiety, relationships or an over-active inner critic. Perhaps you find it hard to trust your decisions and stop people pleasing. My own journey has given me proof that change is always possible. Together, we’ll work to overcome the things that have been holding you back so you can start to feel better.

Welcome, my name is Julia and thank you for taking the time to drop by to learn a little more about me and how I may be able to help you to feel better about your life. It has been my experience that navigating our way through our lives is not always plain sailing and at times we may turn to unhelpful and self-destructive ways to see us through. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, shopping, surgery or unhealthy relationships we are trying to cope with deep unhappiness in the best way we can and as we get older those feelings and addictive behaviour can often get stronger and take us to dark places.

Urban Living Therapy and Wellbeing, is an umbrella term for the type of therapy that I offer. I am a clinical psychologist with over 18 years experience of working with people with complex psychological issues. Very often what brings clients into therapy with me is an accumulation of live stressors, both from past experiences and current everyday challenges. Anxiety, depression, poor emotional coping, self-harm, suicidal thoughts or relationship issues are the areas they wish to address. My clients seek to resolve old issues and develop better ways of managing their emotions and relationships with others.

My goal is to help and support you to develop healthy coping strategies, become more self-aware and experience personal growth. I offer tailor-made therapy that is as individual and unique as you are. Therapy shouldn't just benefit you whilst in session but continue to support you outside of the sessions too. This is achieved by using a combination of talking therapy, worksheets and practical exercises. You can always call me if you are struggling in between sessions. Do you invest more time, love and attention in others than yourself? Then perhaps it is time for you to invest in yourself.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
