I bring a trauma-informed, anti-oppression, LGBTQia2S+ allied approach, with an interest in integrating personal spirituality with therapy.
Finding meaning in life is hard, whether we're feeling stuck in the day-to-day of life or feel overwhelmed by everything life is throwing at us. We search for purpose and happiness, but obstacles get in the way: illness, losses and life changes, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, or just not feeling fully you. Everyone deserves to be heard and understood. Together, we'll explore who you are and what's going on in your life to work towards connecting you to the things that are meaningful and important to you, all while fostering great self-compassion and self-respect.

I believe that we all experience brokenness. I believe in the power of being heard with compassion and empathy. I believe that we can learn how to be kind with ourselves when we experience kindness. You might be thinking about therapy because you want to work through a problem that persists in your life, to make a big choice, take a new step, sort through a past experience, or you simply want to feel better. Whatever brought you here there is nothing too big or too small to bring into our therapeutic space. This is your time.

Knowing someone cares to listen and support as we come to accept difficult circumstances or make decisions for change can help us move through these challenging times. Areas of focus are depression, anxiety, coping strategies, workplace issues, caregiver burnout, palliative/end of life, grief and loss, chronic pain and illness.

I have learned there is wisdom and resilience hidden in even the most painful of patterns, even when these patterns leave us trapped in destructive habits, despair or bad relationships. Once we find the wise intentions behind the old strategies, healing can happen. If you’re used to numbing out or criticizing yourself to get through the hard times – we’ll do it differently. Therapy with me is a judgment-free space to bring your sorrow, anxiety, anger and confusion without having to hide it or push through on your own.

Everybody from an early age develops a 'story'. The story becomes an accumulation of everything that we experience. Made up of thoughts, emotions and feelings. All stories are similar, how we learn to live with our experiences makes our story unique. We learn to identify, believing that we are our story, creating situations and patterns in our lives that often become problematic. Psychotherapy is extremely beneficial if you are experiencing low self esteem, depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, loneliness, anger, forgiveness, relationship difficulties, parenting challenges and family struggles.

Therapy is a journey towards appreciating, knowing and growing into who you are. I want to help you find breathing room in the spaces that feel small, tight and limiting in your life. With the support of my presence, curiosity and body-mind awareness we can clarify what is confusing and bring energy and focus to the next step. With person-to-person humility, I endeavour to meet you in the blank, heavy and unsteady times ready for tears to unravel or the spark of humour that puts it all into perspective. This process can help you create a life that is rich in meaning, dignity and purpose unique to you.

Specializing in anxiety and OCD symptoms! Do you feel stuck in your anxiety? Are intrusive thoughts or memories disturbing you? Have you tried many ways to cope but not really found anything that feels very effective in the long-term. Perhaps your anxiety is also affecting your ability to be present and to function in the ways that you would like to in your relationships, school or work life. If this is the case, do these issues then lead you to experiencing feelings of shame, wondering if there is something wrong with you, or questioning if things will ever get better?

We all know life can be challenging. But sometimes it can get too challenging, and we can’t seem to resolve our issues on our own, or even with the help we're currently getting. There could be anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, grief, or stress (or a combination of these), and the way we’d like to live our life seems out of reach. This can happen to just about all of us at some point. The good news is we don’t have to struggle alone and a professional can really help change things.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
