As a South Asian Muslim woman, I have had the privilege of seeing the world through those identities and gained a deep understanding of the systems in play. I support individuals navigate through the struggles they experience in identity, relationships, emotional regulation, self-esteem, anxiety and other mental health issues. I also work with challenges related to faith, spirituality, cultural differences, and discrimination. If you can relate to these struggles and are looking for a way to navigate through this, I would be happy to create an environment that promotes growth and work towards a positive outcome.

Accepting Clients! You search for therapists but don’t know if you will go through the session because you’re afraid of what you might discover? Sometimes you may not even know why you feel the way you do. As a working mother, I get how hard it is to always be stressed, to feel frustrated, and overwhelmed. It’s hard prioritizing mental health when you are already burdened with so many responsibilities whether finances, home, kids, school, or work. Except, when you finally do put yourself first you realize how liberating it is...to be in control of your emotions, to have the coping mechanisms to help you through the difficult days...

Are you sick of feeling the same way? In moments of doubt, frustration, and overwhelm, thoughts might race through your mind, questioning your choices or worrying about what you've said or done? You might be feeling like you are not good enough, that things will never get better, or that everyone else has it all figured out. Often we can only access our own answers in the presence of a safe, uninvolved other. I offer a safe space for you to explore in the presence of someone who is rooting for you and in your corner. This makes all the difference when it comes to feeling empowered to explore yourself and your difficulties.

Engaging in psychotherapy is a brave step towards reconciling with one's past, making amends with others, and finding peace with oneself. It's a unique relationship that lays the foundation for healing all other relationships. Psychotherapy, in its core, is a spiritual journey—a pilgrimage into the self. Just as a pilgrim walks from temple to temple, seeking enlightenment, an individual's therapeutic journey may involve multiple therapists. I might be your current one, but perhaps not your first nor your last. Each leg of this journey, with each therapist, requires courage and a faith that transformation is attainable.

Our struggles with life and mental health often make us forget how to offer compassion and kindness to ourselves. While we "demonize" our body's response to seemingly easy "routine" functions, therapy can help us understand & recognize how our experiences have shaped our survival strategies and ways of being. My practice is grounded in my work in community-based mental health programs, as well as lived experience of systemic issues. I draw on EMDR, internal family systems, somatic and anti-oppressive approaches, based on the individual/couple's needs. I have specialized training in working with trauma, abuse and relationships.

It seems like no one truly understands how challenging it is to walk the line between two cultures. On one side, there's your family's unique dynamics, expectations, and responsibilities. On the other, the Western norms for work, dating, parenting, and living. The combination creates a tremendous amount of stress, leaving you feeling down, anxious, depressed, and full of guilt. You know you need help setting healthy boundaries, and focusing on self-care, but you need someone who understands the challenges associated with adopting a new culture and society while staying connected and grounded with your own cultural values.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
