For many years I have been studying the consequences of trauma on children and adults.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by trauma, grief or stress, and it's negative affect on you or a loved one? Is it interfering with your ability to feel joy or has it taken away from your quality of life? Have you tried on your own, but you know it would be easier to have someone come alongside you and show you effective ways to heal? For almost 30 years, I have been counselling and teaching children and adults. Throughout my career, I have been invested in learning proven strategies for helping people move forward in the direction of a more full and meaningful life.

Looking for an adult autism assessment with an autistic psychologist? Feeling dismissed by people who don’t understand medical trauma or how hard it is to stop masking? You have the right to feel accepted, heard, and believed—even during an assessment! I was “late-diagnosed” and understand how relieving a diagnosis can be after decades of feeling misunderstood and exhausted. My assessments are thorough and the options were entirely designed by autistic people, who I routinely work with to refine things. You can do the entire assessment from home and take the time you need. Do a FREE self-screen on my site here: www.ndpsych.com

Over the years I have taken intensive training in various therapeutic models including: dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness, solution-focused therapy and trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT).
Sometimes life can feel as though you're on a roller coaster. It's filled with unexpected events, which can be difficult to manage. Without the right supports, we can become overwhelmed and these issues can become challenging to navigate. They can even result in feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, grief and guilt. Since 2015 I have been providing counselling and therapy services to individuals in Fredericton and surrounding areas, and I would be happy to provide you with a consultation to discuss how I could support you.

I've worked as a registered nurse, educator, and in the last three years I’ve been working as a counselling therapist for front-line workers struggling with trauma and chronic stress.
*Please note: I'm often in session with clients, therefore the best way to reach me is via email. I help adults, teens, and professional helpers build inner strength, confidence, and hope when they are feeling weighed down by stress, anxiety, and depression. My clients feel stuck due to life struggles such as: work, school, relationships, ongoing stress, and loss. They also struggle with finding confidence, peace, and joy within themselves. Sometimes life throws us a curve-ball and we can find ourselves struggling to cope wondering, "How did I get here?" I know life can be tough sometimes and I know how to help.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
