I work with adults coping with various mental health concerns. A confidential and caring therapeutic relationship is essential for you to comfortably share the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that have been most distressing for you. My treatment approach is integrative and collaborative, helping clients identify their strengths and achieve their therapeutic goals. In my practice, I use evidence-based therapeutic modalities (such as CBT, DBT, ACT) suitable to each client’s core concerns.

In all my counselling, I use an amalgamation of theoretical approaches, with a focus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy.
I assist clients in uncovering their ideal self, identifying goals to get there, and creating a plan to reach those goals. My approach focuses on the interactions between our thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how these play a major role in how we conceptualize the world around us.

My trauma-informed practice is rooted in evidence-based theories and techniques such as Polyvagal Theory, Cognitive Behaviour Theory (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Mindful Self-Compassion.
I recognize that it can be challenging to know where to start when you are feeling stuck or overwhelmed. For many people, the path through a difficult time is confusing and full of mixed emotions. My role is to help you identify the strength that you already hold and support you to create more room for self-compassion, awareness, and ease. I believe that our first priority is to build the trust needed for you to find comfort in sharing your life stories and experiences at your own pace.

I primarily practice Emotion Focused Therapy, but also draw on other evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and mindfulness-based approaches to best suit your needs and preferences.
I work with individuals (16+) who are seeking support related to trauma, anxiety, low mood, grief, self-criticism, and interpersonal difficulties. I approach therapy from a place of empathy, warmth and curiosity, and value collaboration as we work together to build trust and safety in the therapeutic space. Through our work together, we will explore and gain a deeper understanding of what underlies painful emotions and feeling overwhelmed in order to help you feel more fulfilled, confident, and at ease in your life and relationships. My work is supervised by Dr. Sarah Thompson, C.Psych.

My ideal client is one who wants things to be different and is engaged in the counselling process. It is not necessary as I have made progress with resistant and/or mandated clients such as children or court-ordered clients, but it sure helps. The issues I can mostly help with include being hooked on certain thoughts such as worrying, anxiety, sadness, self-deprecating thoughts and obsessions and compulsions. I can also be most helpful when someone's behaviors are leading to avoiding experiences of life such as addiction, avoidance, distractions, and short term energy releasing behaviors. Clients want change.

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophising or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
