I work with clients who experience anxiety, stress, trauma, abuse, PTSD, relationship issues, chronic illness, injury, grief, workplace issues and life changes. Clients often find it helpful to explore their individual needs and personal goals. Everyone deserves to feel heard and understood. Clients I work with highly value empathy, compassion, collaboration and feeling safe in the counselling space to build a therapeutic alliance together. Nurturing self compassion is often helpful and leads to better treatment progress and outcomes.

Hi, I'm Bronwyn, and I specialize in ethical non-monogamy (ENM) and chronic illness through online and in-person counselling. All neurodivergent, LGBTQI+, kink and BDSM folks are extremely welcome in my practice! ENM covers a range of relationship structures that fall outside of social norms, such as open-relationships, polyamory and swingers. Therapeutic topics often include jealousy, boundary setting, trust, attachment and sexual discovery. My work in the ENM field led me to author a book "The Beginner's Guide to Ethical Non-Monogamy". In this space I'm also known as 'The Polyamory Practitioner'; join me on Instagram and Facebook.

I work with individuals struggling with a range of issues (see below), whether that comes from a desire to understand more about changes to your mental health or general wellbeing, or accessing therapy to assist with a specific diagnosis. I believe our connection to nature is an important component of health that is sometimes overlooked, and make efforts to include this in therapy. It takes courage to reach out for help. Having the space to express yourself without judgement, and having access to ideas or tools can make a big difference. To read more about my experience or areas of interest, visit: wildtherapie.au

Hi, I'm Kelly. I am a therapist with a special interest in working with people living with disabilities and chronic health conditions – especially neurological and acquired disabilities. We know that people living with disabilities are more at risk of experiencing mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. You might have seen a mental health professional before, but felt that they just “didn’t get it”. You might find yourself having to explain your condition over and over again, or explaining to your therapist why something they've suggested isn’t practical for you to implement.

Seeking counselling can feel overwhelming. Years of working with young people have taught me to slow down and respect what is in front of me. I offer services that comfort people and assist them to build their skills, even when they don't think they can. I work to assist people to feel less overwhelmed and better equipped to cope with life stressors.

Hello, I'm a fully trained counselling psychotherapist and I offer private individual therapy on an ongoing or short-term basis. I am trained in the Psychodynamic method and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and use an integration of these ideas to best help you. It can be difficult to find a space to reflect and I offer a secure, non-judgemental, confidential environment, where together we can find that space for you. I am very patient and understand that taking that first step towards counselling, and beginning to make changes can be very difficult and I'll do my very best to support you. PACFA, BACP & ACTO Memberships.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
